Whiteside County Students Celebrate Stewardship Day


Two hundred fifty-eight Fourth Grade students of Whiteside County took part in the 9th annual Conservation Stewardship Day September 28th at Palisades State Park in Savanna, IL. A total attendance of 550 students from 24 classes participated in the outdoor education program sponsored by the Tri-County sponsorship of the Soil & Water Conservation Districts of Whiteside, Carroll, and JoDaviess County.

The one day Outdoor Education Program presented students with classes to learn more about the natural resources and environment of Illinois. A variety of topics and content was provided by speakers from the Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources, Fisheries, Forestry; University of Illinois Extension; Soil and Water Conservation Districts; and, several private volunteer presenters.

Twelve classes from five Whiteside County Elementary Schools took part in the day’s activities. Morrison’s Southside Grade 4 classes of Mrs. Cheryl Geiger, Mrs. Lorna Temple and Mrs. Nancy Vandermyde attended along with classes from Fulton Elementary of the River Bend School District; East Coloma Elementary-District #12 of Rock Falls; St. Andrew Catholic School of Sterling, and St. Mary’s Grade School of Sterling.

The day’s Program included a variety of presentations and demonstrations on soil and water quality; animals of nature as bees, birds, and rattlesnakes; special topics of interest as Mississippi River Native American culture presented by Dennis Wright, Thomson, who presented artifacts and a teepee used by Woodland Indians of the Mississippi River Basin. Ron Lawfer, Kent, and his Jersey cow, “Bessie”, gave students the opportunity to milk a cow and learn about the importance of the dairy farmer to Illinois.
