On Sunday afternoon, September 18, seven apparitions made an appearance at Grove Hill Cemetery.

Mary Robertson, also known as Sarah Thorndike, and five of her phantom children gathered in front of the pink, granite column that tops their family monument. Enjoying their afternoon above-ground were Mary Jane (Lilian Maxfield), Robert (Marcus Maxfield), James (Devin Lewis), William (Sammy Dalati), and the baby, Wallace.

The Robertson family rehearsed their lines for the upcoming Sesquicentennial Ghost Walk on Saturday, September 24.

A short distance away, two unrelated spirits strolled the sod near their resting places. One specter was William Pleasant, aka Eliot Driver, who read epitaphs for himself and a childhood friend on the tombstone they share. Both epitaphs refer to their early years as slaves, before serving in the American Civil War.

Nearby stood the ghost of Charles Tanderup. He also fought in the Civil War and received his American citizenship as a reward for this service. Tanderup’s alter-ego is Craig Doak.

Each of these spirits was clearly visible in the daylight. For their reappearance Saturday evening, they will be illuminated by lanterns, luminaries, and oil torches. Visitors to the cemetery are urged to bring a flashlight for walking the brick paths.

Four additional spirits will speak to the public during the Sesquicentennial fundraiser Saturday evening: Lydia Hulett (Connie Swanson-DeSpain), Walter Stowell (Rev. Dan Swinson), Anna Huisingh (Stephanie Vavra), and Stowell’s Caregiver (Kris Zschiesche.)

Tickets are available for $5 at Thecity1.com office at 218 W. Main and can be purchased at Grove Hill Cemetery the night of the performances. Guided tours depart every 15 minutes from 7:45 through 9:00.
