Paint the Town is Saturday |
|
The surface of Morrison’s Main Street will again become a canvas for hundreds of amateur artists of all ages. “It’s such an unconventional canvas. Kids can’t normally paint on the street, or its called graffiti. But here, it is art,” Barb Bees Children’s Art Preservation Association (CAPA) board member comments. Beginning in 1994, CAPA has produced Paint the Town, a unique family art event. The downtown is blocked off and a grid of squares is painted on the street surface. More than 900 children, families and individuals are expected to add their artistic inspiration to this unique outdoor gallery. For the 2005 event, 1000 squares will be prepared for painting. “Because the event has grown so much and we want to accommodate as many painters as possible we felt it would be wise to add more squares,” Bees said. “We have come a long way since the events inception in 1994 when 250 squares were painted.” You may pre-register to paint a masterpiece along or with a friend for $10 per participant. The registration cost is $15 the day of the event. Participants receive an assigned 5-foot by 5-foot square on the street, a 2005 event T-shirt, freebies from sponsors and all the supplies needed to paint: a primary color paint set (white, black, red, blue and yellow – one set per square), chalk for sketching, brushes, and cups and a palette for mixing colors. Pre-registration is advised as squares are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Painting is from 12 noon to approximately 6 p.m., and bees says, “It is not unusual to find someone still working at 6 p.m. These young artists are so enthusiastic and intense about putting their ideas in their art.” There is more than just painting to the day. A variety of music and great food form the backdrop for the painting. CAPA invites you to paint under the sun or just bring a lawn chair and enjoy the sights, sounds and tastes. The day following the event, Sunday, September 18, Morrison’s downtown will remain blocked to allow art lovers to safely stroll the street and view the finished art. “The entire downtown are becomes an outdoor art gallery not just for a day but for weeks until the paint gradually wears away under weather’s attack, leaving the canvas ready for next year,” Bees said. “You have to see it to completely fathom its size and extent. But participating is much more fun!” As a not-for-profit organization CAPA devotes all proceeds from Paint the Town the support of community and educational art enrichment programs and scholarships.
