Whiteside County 4-H’ers Exhibit Projects at Illinois State

Source: Karen Atkinson, Community Worker, 4-H Youth and Family, 815/772-4075

Whiteside County 4-H members sent their 4-H projects down to the Illinois State Fair Junior Show for the entire length of the Illinois State Fair this year. Three individuals went down to also do action oriented displays on the last day of the State Fair. Local youngsters exhibit projects ranging from computer science to woodworking, and clothing construction to photography.

By the time they get to the state fair, these kids have already shown their commitment to excellence. They earned the right to advance to the state fair by being “the best of the best” at their county fairs and 4-H shows.

The Junior Show for 2005 consisted of approximately 3700 different projects from all counties in Illinois displayed in various buildings at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Visitors of the Illinois State Fair were able to walk through and enjoy looking at the various talents of not only our Whiteside County 4-H’ers but of all of the 4-H’ers in the state.

The kids had the opportunity to answer a standard set of questions that all 4-H’ers had to send with their project to the State Fair. Those questions consisted of: Explain the steps you took to create this project exhibit, List a few things you learned or insights you gained from this project, If you completed the project again, what would you do differently and How will you apply what you have learned to this project next year or to another project. The judges then had the opportunity to score and comment on the 4-H’ers exhibits.

The 4-H’ers are not really competing against one another; they’re competing against a standard. Exhibitors whose projects far exceed the project standards may be awarded purple Superior ribbons at the discretion of the judges. Each participant receives a red, white and blue Award of Excellence rosette. The results of the general projects and livestock projects are as follows:
