Soybean Cyst Nematode Clinic

Source: Greg Clark, Extension Unit Educator, Crop Systems, 815/772-4075

There will be a soybean cyst nematode (SCN) clinic held Wednesday, August 24 at the Whiteside County Extension Office in Morrison. Soybean growers and individuals working in the agricultural sector are encouraged to bring soil samples from suspect 2005 soybean fields or fields intended to be planted to soybeans in 2006 to the program locations. Samples will be accepted from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on August 24 and screened on site for Soybean Cyst Nematode presence.

Individuals are limited to three field composite samples. Specialty tests such as diagnosing soybean cyst nematode at some laboratories would cost $18.00, but at this clinic, there will be no cost.

If you cannot attend this clinic during this time another clinic is scheduled in Amboy. Date: Thursday, August 24, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., CPS, Directions: Route 52 between Amboy and Sublette, IL.

Soil samples should be taken in a manner similar to that used for soil fertility analysis, however soil cores should be taken within a few inches of the soybean row when collected in soybean fields. For best results, use a soil probe to collect soil cores to a depth of six to eight inches. Collect 12 to 24 soil cores in a zigzag pattern for every 10 to 20 acres to be sampled. Thoroughly mix the soil cores and place about one pint of mixed soil in a plastic bag. Samples should be stored in a cool, dark location until processed. If you have any questions, please fill free and call the Whiteside County Extension Office at (815) 772-4075.
