Tours of the Fair Grounds Century Old Historic Round Barn

Tours of the Whiteside County Fairground’s historic “round barn” were so popular last year that they are being scheduled again for this year’s 135th annual fair, Aug. 16-20.

The twice-daily free tours, given by former board member Ed Abbott, will be held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 17th through Friday, August 19th. The 2 p.m. tour will start right after the bicycle give away.

Those interested in taking the tour are asked to assemble outside the secretary’s office in the center of the fair grounds. Each tour will last 30–60 minutes to view the beautiful barns on the fair grounds.

The century old barn—which actually has 14 sides—is only one of a few remaining barns from the turn of the century with such a historic link to the past. In recent years, volunteers and fair board members have made a special commitment to restoration and renovation of the barn which serves as a focal point of the fair grounds.

During fair week heavy horse exhibitors turn the barn into a show place for their beautiful livestock as they await their turns in the show ring.

For more information about these, or any other fair events, check out the fair’s website at Whiteside County Fair.
