Session to Focus on Nutrient Management and Tough Weeds

Nutrient Management in Corn and Managing the Tough Weeds of Northern Illinois will be the focus of a workshop for producers, agribusiness dealers, and crop scouts on August 10 in DeKalb County. The workshop will be conducted at the Crops Training Center on the Northern Illinois Agronomy Research Center, 14509 University Road, Shabbona and is sponsored by University of Illinois Extension.

The nutrient management portion will address corn rotation, nitrogen rate trials, and the use of the SPAD meter and other means of detecting the nitrogen status of corn. In addition, nitrogen use by corn and the economics of nitrogen fertilization will be discussed. Dr. Emerson Nafziger, Extension crop specialist will lead the discussion.

The tough weeds session will address effective and environmentally sound management strategies for problem weeds in northern Illinois, including giant ragweed and bur cucumber. These two pests are examples of weeds that have adapted to current agronomic production practices. Dr. Aaron Hager, Extension weed control specialist will make the presentation. The workshop will include presentations, printed materials, hands-on samples, discussion, and in-field activities (weather permitting).

Three continuing education units have been applied for Certified Crop Advisers. Registration begins at 8:30 am, and the program will be conducted from 9 am to 12 Noon (lunch not provided). Make check payable to University of Illinois Extension. A minimum of 20 reservations is needed to conduct the workshop.
