Services held for Bob Potter


Attorney Robert H. Potter, 87, of Morrison, died Saturday, June 4, 2005 at Resthave Nursing Home.

Born March 2, 1918 in Morrison, the son of Albert M. and Lillian Paulson Potter, he practiced law for 56 years, becoming a partner with Bull, Ludens & Potter in 1952 and retiring in 2002. He maintained the firm’s Fulton office for many years and was instrumental in the formation of the Fulton Flood Control District.

Mr. Potter was a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers as well as the Whiteside County and Illinois State Bar Associations.

Mr. Potter attended Northwestern University where he completed officers training prior to WWII. He then served in the Navy as a gunnery officer, first on the USS Savannah, a light cruiser in the Atlantic theatre, and later on the USS Cowpens, a light carrier in the Pacific theatre. After the war, Mr. Potter graduated from the University of Michigan School of Law.

On Nov 6, 1947, he married Barbara Shanley of Norfolk VA, and they soon began designing and building a home together in Morrison. In later years, the Potters spent their winter months with friends in Green Valley, AZ.

Mr. Potter was actively involved with the Morrison School Board, Fulton Kiwanis, Morrison Rotary, and Morrison Country Club. He enjoyed friendly competition in golf, tennis, baseball and basketball. His 1935 basketball team was recently inducted into the Morrison High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mr. Potter was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morrison.

Throughout his life he advocated for such issues as population control, handgun control, education reform, silent train whistles, and the preservation of the US Constitution.

Mr. Potter is survived by a brother, Jim of Arcadia CA; son, Tom (Nancy) of Sterling; daughters, Ann of Minneapolis MN, and Sally of Lansing MI; and 2 grandsons: Jackson and John.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a brother, Al, formerly of Clinton.

A private graveside service will be held.

The public is invited to a community gathering at Sunset Woods (formerly Morrison Country Club), 903 W Morris St. on Friday, June 10th from 4:30pm-8pm. Remarks at 6pm.
