The MJHS Jazz Band performed in the cafeteria following the concert.

Morrison Junior High School held its Band and Choir Spring Concert on Thursday evening, May 12, 2005 in the High School Auditorium.

The Concert Band began the program with four numbers. Their first number was “Riders In The Sky.” The second number was “Duty, Honor, Country,” which was narrated by Southside Principal Jim Prombo. The narration was a farewell speech given by General Douglas MacArthur to the Corps of Cadets at West Point on May 12, 1962. The band will be performing this number for the Memorial Day Celebration. The final two number were “Light Cavalry Overture” and “Ritual.”

The Sixth Grade Choir performed next, singing “Walk Dem Bones!” and “Blast From the Past.” “Blast From the Past” was an excerpt of five different songs including “Snoopy,” Wooly Bully,” “Yackety Yak,” “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” and “Yellow Polka Dot Bikini.”

The Seventh and Eighth Grade Choir sang next. They performed excerpts from commercials which included “Almond Joy-Mounds,” “Oscar Meyer Weiner,” “Pepsi,” and “Alka-Seltzer.” It was entitled “Commercials! Commercials!” Their final number was “Best of the Beach Boys.” Songs included in this were “I Get Around,” “In My Room,” “California Girls,” and “Fun Fun Fun.”

The final number for the evening was “Shine on Me” in which the two choirs joined together.

Special awards were given out throughout the performances to students who had shown extra efforts in their work by participating in contests and extra activities. Band winners were: Sixth grade – Rachel Hook, Marie Deter and William Bird. Seventh grade winners were: Victor Selman, Tim Noe, Spencer Horn and Laura Bean. Eighth grade winners were: Derek Stevens, Matthew Martin, Raechel Stone and Steven Karvelius.

Choir members who received awards were: Sixth grade – Colton Sedig and Amanda Kallemeyn; Seventh grade – Devon French and Laura Bean; Eighth grade – Katelyn Sedig, Nora Beswick, Jordan Achilles and Derek Meinsma.

Members of the Junior High Band are:

Flute – Marie Deter, Jacklyn Hanson, Samantha Mapes, Rachel Hook, Erin Stansifer, Kaitlyn Kenady, Mary Jo Conner, Meredith Oostenryk, Cody Benda, Emily Weets, Stacy Meurs, Keisha Hodge, Courtney Johnson, Samantha Sumption and Amanda Wiersema.

Oboe – Steven Karvelius, Laura Bean and Molly Sedig.

Clarinet – Matthew Martin, Elizabeth Hess, Amy Landheer, Nicholas Anderson, Olivia Adolph, Jillian Mann, Jill Beswick, Danelle Domdey, Kelsey Challand, Ashley Ruchotzke, Heather Brown and Kirsten Mapes.

Bass Clarinet - Stephanie Styles. Alto Saxophone – Spencer Horn, Victor Selman, Michael McGarvey, Mitchell Story, Zachary Greul, Amanda Kallemeyn, Nyla Hamstra, Dorothy Gatz and Kelsey Sibley.

Tenor Saxophone – Sammy Dalati

Baritone Saxophone – Kevin Bielema.

Cornet – Derek Meinsma, Tim Noe, William Bird, Nick Vargas, Kyle Patten, Tyler Jo Smoot, Scott Simpson, Jacob Engelkens, Stephen Head, Arron Marken and Amanda Carrico.

French Horn – Brianna Barnett, Cody Lange and Elliot Manninen.

Trombone – Raechel Stone, Elliott Riggen, Dustin Belt, Kyle Dermody, Josh Vos, August Ufkin and Nathan Brinkmeier.

Baritone – Alex Osborn, Kendall Deter and Nick Workman.

Tuba – Luke Barry and Ashley Vegter.

Percussion – Derek Stevens, Trevan Burn, Kurt Schmidt, Curtis Fuller, Brianna Connelly and Morgan Durham.
