Popular Extension Web Sites in Spanish

Two more popular University of Illinois Extension web sites are now available in Spanish, said Jane Scherer, U of I Extension urban programs specialist. The two sites--"A Walk in the Woods and Natural Resources: The Environment and Ecosystems"--join several others that are now available in both English and Spanish.

"Both 'A Walk in the Woods' and 'Natural Resources' are geared toward classroom use," explained Scherer. "These sites are frequently used by teachers to augment the teaching of science. For instance, the 'Natural Resources' site contains information on climate, wildlife, integrated pest management, the soil and eco-systems, sustainable agriculture, and the web of life. There are lesson plans for teachers and guides for students." All of the old and new sites are part of Extension’s Urban Programs Resource Network, located at: Urban Programs Scherer said other sites available in both English and Spanish include:

- Dealing with Toddlers which helps parents understand their young children and deal with issues like toilet training, encouraging good eating, and behavior problems.

- Trees are Terrific, Understanding the Secret Life of Trees, the Adventures of Herman, and My First Garden, all sites geared to helping children learn about science.

- A Guide to Babysitting, which assists youngsters who wish to become babysitters.

- A number of sites in the "Hort Corner" section which deal with home gardening and landscaping.

"There is also a directory of Spanish language resources that are available from other Extension systems throughout the United States," she said.
