Morrison Institute of Technology hosted the Illinois Drafting Educator’s Association 27th Annual High School Drafting/CAD Competition for Region 9 on Friday, March 4. Eight students from Dan Harm’s CAD classes at Jo Davies Carroll Area Vocational Center in Elizabeth, IL competed “Students are able to compete in seven different divisions but we only had students competing in three – machine CAD, architectural CAD, and solids CAD,” said Region 9 coordinator and M.I.T. CAD instructor Jan Drosopoulos.
Brandon Saxby won the machine CAD division with Nick Winter taking second place and Phil Grommes taking third. Machine CAD competitors had to create a detailed drawing of housing for a press fixture. The students were given reference sheets that explained the details of the housing. Reference sheets also included assembly drawings, written notes and instructions, and detailed drawings of mating parts.
First place in the architectural CAD division went to Hailey Schultz. Architectural CAD competitors had to create drawings of a proposed garage remodeling. Students were given reference sheets that included two single line floor plans and a perspective and back elevation with specifications for the main and upper levels of the proposed garage remodeling. Students had to create presentation drawings showing the proposed remodeling of the garage into a Carriage house. Phil Borsdorf won second place in this division.
Dan Schelberger won the CAD solids division. CAD solids competitors were given several pictorial drawings of 20 abstract blocks. Students had to construct 3D models of as many of the objects as possible and specify the volume and check two dimensions of each object. Chet Parsons won second place in the CAD solids division.
The High School Drafting/CAD Competition sponsored by the I.D.E.A. is an annual event held every spring at 19 regional sites across Illinois. Morrison Institute of Technology has hosted the Region 9 competition for the past 15 years.
