Morrison High School Key Club held its 7th Annual Blood Drive on Monday, March 7 in the auditorium of Morrison High School.

Thirty-six first time donors contributed to this worth cause. The Annual Blood Drive is part of the Key Club’s service projects.

Fifty-eight students and two adults donated. Originally there were three adults and 69 students signed up.

Blood drive chairpersons were EmmaLea VanZuiden and Aimee Marruffo. Advisors of Key Club are Kris Bielema and Gwenn Rickertsen.

Twenty-seven Key Clubbers worked as greeters, escorts, runners, canteen workers, unloaders and reloaders and helped with clean up.

Andrew Holt stated when asked why he had decided to donate, “My buddies talked me into doing it. I’m all about it. The needle was more massive than I thought it would be.” Andrew was one of the first time donors.

Kelly Tenboer also a first time donor stated, “It wasn’t bad. The finger prick was the worst. I just wanted to do it. I wanted to help save lives and of course the free t-shirt.”

Brent Beveroth, a second time donor said, “The needle was huge.”

Bridgett Wood a first time donor wanted to find out what her blood type was.

Jeff Roggy who was a pro with being his fifth time to donate blood was glad to get out of class and said it was fun.

Emily Miller who was given moral support and a hand to squeeze by Katie Bunt said, “I get queasy when I see blood. This is my first time and I think it is a good thing to do because I am helping people."

Donors are advised to drink extra fluids, not to do any heavy exercising or lifting, and if dizziness occurs to lay down with their feet elevated. If bruising occurs at the sight of the needle entrance they are advised to apply ice for the first 24-hours followed by heat packs.

A total of 45 units of blood were collected. Workers from the Heart of America Region, Peoria American Red Cross Services operated this blood drive.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed March as Red Cross Month in 1943. Every year the President of the United States proclaims March to be "Red Cross Month" giving the American Red Cross an opportunity to promote its services and celebrate its successes in serving communities across the U.S.
