McGyver Type Bomb Detonated at Junior High

What could have been a very serious situation resulted in no one being injured and no reported damage.

Monday, March 1, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a McGyver type bomb was detonated in one of the boy’s restrooms at Morrison Junior High School.

According to Police Chief Ernie Huling a bomb like this could have the potential to spray hydrochloric acid and shrapnel in liquid and vapor form from 10-20 feet depending on its size.

“We have had experiences with these types of bombs since the 1980’s, but to my knowledge this is the first which has ever been detonated in a school building,” stated Huling.

According to Junior High Principal, Steve Wroble, “I happened to be in the hallway at the time it detonated. It sounded like a plywood board hitting a floor. My first thought was ‘what fell off of a wall?,’ but a student informed me it had come from the boy’s bathroom. I was in there seconds after it happened.”

Security measures have been reinforced in the school. Teachers are watching the bathrooms between class periods and it is locked during lunch hour. “We are also cracking down on hall passes during classes,” stated Wroble. “Everyone is more tuned in to what is going on.” Teachers are keeping logs on which students leave, what time they leave and when they return to the class.” Hall passes also need to be with the student at which time they are in the hallways.

The incident is still under investigation by Morrison Police Department. At this time no arrests have been made.
