GPS Camp Targets 5th-7th Grade Youth

University of Illinois Extension invites boys and girls in grades 5-7 to participate in the 2nd annual GPS Camp! This two-day event will be held at Lorado Taft Field Campus in Oregon, IL in April. University of Illinois Extension is sponsoring this event, along with special financial support from the Illinois 4-H Foundation; County Market, Sterling; Kroger, Sterling; Mr. G’s Grocery, Prophetstown; Osco Drug, Sterling; and Rayovac, Dixon. Participation is limited to youth in Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside Counties.

GPS (Global Positioning System) is an emerging technology worldwide. It is a technology that is being integrated into our everyday world through fields as diverse as agriculture, wildlife conservation, archeology, meteorology, space exploration, and geography. Industry experts agree that the expansion of this technology will continue in years to come and GPS will become even more commonplace than it is already.

GPS Camp is designed to introduce youth to GPS technology, to open their eyes to potential careers, and to provide a fun, stimulating, and non-threatening environment in which to experience GPS fundamentals and navigation hands-on.

Extension is seeking youth participants to help solve “The Case of Captain Geko and the Missing GPS Power” at this year’s event. Using what they learn about GPS, youth will work in teams to try and help the superhero regain his power and capture the international villain responsible for stealing it! This will help youth gain confidence and skill in geography, science, math, and mapping.

GPS Camp will begin at 9 a.m. on April 2nd with registration. It will conclude at 3:00 p.m. on April 3rd. A registration fee of $60 includes lodging, meals, snacks, and activity materials. Registration for the event is limited to 50 youth and will close no later than Friday, March 11th.

Registration forms are available in the Ogle County Extension office, 815/732-2191, 421 W. Pines Rd., Suite 10, Oregon, IL 61061. They may also be dhttp://www.oglecounty4h.org/ownloaded off the Ogle County 4-H website at Forms. If you will need reasonable accommodations to participate, please contact Greg Clark at 815/772-4075. University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment.
