Cub Scouts hold Pinewood Derby

Brandon Schroeder gives the thumbs up at the Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby.

Cub Scout Pack 328 held its Pinewood Derby Saturday morning, January 29, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

A computerized tracking program was used in scoring the races. Each car ran a minimum of three times down the track before the eliminations began. Trophies were awarded for first, second and third places in each rank of the scouts. Also five special category trophies were awarded for Best Paint Job, Best Craftsmanship, Most Unique, Meanest Street Machine and Fastest Looking.

Before the cars are allowed to race they must be checked for weight, length, height, width and materials used to meet regulations and restrictions.

First, second and third place cars at the end of the race is wrapped in bubble wrap and packed in a box to await the Blackhawk Area Council Pinewood Derby in April at Machesney Park Mall in Rockford. Although only the first and second place cars will race in Rockford the third place car is also boxed in the event that the first or second place winners cannot attend.
