Alfalfa Strategies Discussed February 8 |

Alfalfa growers and dealers should make plans to be in Stockton on February 8, 2005 for the “Northwest Illinois Alfalfa Conference”. This event is designed to help alfalfa producers, agriculture dealers, and crop consultants fine-tune cost effective strategies for seed selection, soil fertility, fall management, and marketing the crop according to Jim Morrison, Extension Educator, Crop Systems, Rockford Extension Center. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Holy Cross Parish Center, 223 E. Front Avenue, Stockton, IL. It can be located by taking Route 78 to downtown Stockton, turn east on Front Avenue, and go one block. Speakers include Dr. Steve Barnhart, Forage Agronomist at Iowa State University discussing “Hybrid Alfalfa and Other Seed Traits-Do They Make a Difference?” and “Manure Application and Fall Management-Perceptions and Reality”. Dave Feltes, Extension IPM Educator will comment on “Don’t Let Insects Bite into Your Profits”. Other topics include “Hay Marketing-Putting the Pieces Together” and “Implications of Alfalfa Nutrient Status and Using Growing Degree Days”. Addressing these topics will be Jim Endress, Extension Farm Management Educator, and Jim Morrison, Extension Crops Educator, respectively. Two producers will discuss their alfalfa production and marketing system and a preview of the June 11-15, 2005 American Forage and Grassland Council meeting in Bloomington, IL will be given. A registration fee of $22.00 per person to cover lunch, refreshments, and handout material is due February 1, 2005 to the JoDaviess County Extension office, 204 Vine Street, Box 600, Elizabeth, IL 61028; phone 815-858-2273. Make check payable to University of Illinois Extension. If paid after February 1, the registration fee will be $27.00 per person. The Conference has applied for Continuing Education Credit for Certified Crop Advisers.
