F/S Fillies fall to Irish FTs.

By: Lindsey Smith
Friday, December 10th, was an incredibly stressful and frustrating game for the Sophomore Fillies basketball team. It didn’t start out that way, until the third quarter hit.

The game started smoothly. Things were going decently. The girls would have liked to score more than just four points in the first quarter, but their defense was strong. Clinton’s Prince of Peace Lady Fighting Irish Junior Varsity team scored just two points in the first against Morrison’s sophomore team. Both of them were from free throws.
The second quarter went even better. The Fillies were able to put in seven points, and again hold the Irish to just two points. Just as the first quarter, these two points came from free throws. This trend of the Irish scoring only at the line would come back to haunt the Fillies. Going into the locker rooms, the score was 11-4, in favor of the Fillies.
Then, the third quarter struck. It was very frustrating to say the least. The Fillies had 13 fouls called on them in just the third quarter, while Prince of Peace had only five. The Irish scored 20 points in that quarter, over half of them coming from the free throw line. Morrison remained composed enough to answer back with nine points. At the end of the third, the score was now the Fillies behind 20-24.
Morrison managed to get the fouls down in the fourth. They had just four called on them in the fourth. Two of them, however, were turning points in the game. The first one was an intentional foul that was called on Morrison’s wing player Brianne Janssen. This caused the Fillies to loose their composer, and it took them a while to get it back. The second foul that was a turning point in the game was when the Fillies freshmen point guard Ashlie Patten fouled out with 11.9 seconds left in the game. At the time, the Fillies were tied with the Irish, but because of the foul, #3 went to the line, where she made both free throws. This ended up winning the game for the Irish, 33-35.
Jessica Scott led the team in scoring with nine points. Ashlie followed her with 8. Kelly Tenboer put in 7 points, and Brianne scored six times. Lindsey Smith had 2 points, and Brandy Stuart wrapped up the scoring with one point.
Prince of Peace shot 35 free throws in the game. They made 23 of them. #3, Lauren Ryan, scored 14 points in the game. All of them were off of free throws. She missed just two of her attempts.
The Fillies were allowed to the line just 10 times. They could only cash in on five of them. Jessica led the team in free throw shooting percentage. She was 3 for 4. Brandy scored her point from the free throw line. Brandy was 1 for 2. Kelly shot 3 times from the line, but could only cash in on one. Ashlie shot at the line once, but couldn’t get it too fall.
Prince of Peace couldn’t seem to find the basket. They shot 35 times, making just 6 of them for a field goal percentage of 17%. The Fillies were 14 for 45. Morrison’s field goal percentage was 31%.
The next home game for Morrison is on Tuesday, December 21. They’ll take on the Lady Cardinals of Erie for the first time this year. Tip off is at 6 for the sophomore team. The Varsity will follow at approximately 7:30. This is the last game that the Fillies have until coming back from Winter Vacation.
