Fillies win 1st round by 12. |
| By: Lindsey Smith The Varsity Fillies took a short trip over to Fulton for the Deb Norman Memorial Girls’ Basketball Tournament. They cleared the Geneseo J.V. team in the first round by 12 points. This sent them to the winners bracket. The Fillies record is now 6-4. In the first quarter, the Fillies left no doubt as to who they thought should win the game. They put up 20 points in the first, while holding Geneseo to just four points. Geneseo turned it up on both ends of the court in the second. They put in 10 points, but that still wasn’t enough to outscore Morrison. The Fillies added 13 more before heading to the locker room with a 33-14 lead. The third quarter was a tiny bit of a scare for Morrison. Geneseo came out scoring 14 points to double their score. They held Morrison to 7 points. At the end of the quarter, the score was 40-28. Morrison and Geneseo matched each other point for point in the fourth quarter. Both teams put in 13 points. The final score showed Morrison winning the game 53-41. About the only stat that was close to equal in the competition was fouls. Morrison had 20 fouls, sending Geneseo to the line 26 times. They made 14 of their attempts. Geneseo was called for 21 fouls. Morrison was sent to the line 24 times, where they made 10 of them. Katie Tenboer led the team in free throw percentage. She drained both of her attempts. Heather Andersen knocked in four of her six shots from the line. Jodi Medendorp made it to the free throw stripe six times and scored on two of them. Michaele Vock hit one of her three free throw attempts. Amanda “Smiley” Smith put in one of her five FT shots. Abby Vock made it to the line twice, but couldn’t cash in on them. Abby and Jodi co-led the team in scoring with 10 points each. Amanda followed with 9 points. Michaele was the only Filly to hit a three pointer. She fouled out of the game, but not until after she scored eight points. Katie and Kelly Tenboer both scored six points in the game. Heather Andersen put in four points. As a team, the Fillies stole the ball 15 times against Geneseo. Michaele led the team in that column with six of them. Katie swiped the ball three times. Kelly and Abby each mugged a Geneseo player twice. Jodi and Amanda stole the ball once each. Abby and Heather had Morrison’s two blocks in the game. The Fillies were out rebounded by the Geneseo team. They had 34 boards, while Morrison grabbed 29. 18 of those 29 rebounds were offensive. Jodi snatched 9 rebounds total, five of which were on offense. Michaele was on the boards too. She clasped 3 of “D” and 5 on offense. Abby snagged five boards, all of which were on the offensive end. Half of Katie’s rebounds were offensive. She clutched four total. Amanda brought in three boards, including one on the offensive glass. The Fillies had 19 turnovers in the game. As for field goal percentage, Geneseo was 13 for 41, giving them 32%. Morrison nailed 21 of their 57 shots, putting them at 37%. In the Fillies next game, on Wednesday, December 15th, the Fillies would play the tournament’s host Fulton for the advancement to the championship round. by larryg |
