Varsity Fillies fall to Lady Comets by 8. |
| By: Lindsey Smith On the 7th of December, the Varsity Fillies played in one of their most important conference games of the year. They traveled over to Newman High School to face the Lady Comets for the second time this year. In their first meeting, Newman took the game 51-29. The Fillies couldn’t get much going in the first half. Abby Vock was the only Filly able to connect with anything. She scored all of Morrison’s first half points. Newman came out strong. They put up 13 points on the board in the first quarter and held Morrison to just 2. The second quarter was really low scoring. Both teams turned up the “D” and forced quite a few turnovers. Morrison scrounged up six more points, while holding Newman to three. The first half score was Morrison, 8, and Newman, 16. Morrison found the basket more in the third. They put in 10 points, more than doubling their half-time score. Newman added 13 more points. Going into the fourth, the Lady Comets led the Fillies by 11 points. Morrison got three points back in the fourth quarter. They dropped in 15 points. Newman was also in double digits with 12. The final score was 41-33, in Newman’s favor. Sophomore Abby Vock led all scorers in the game with 16. (Newman’s Mellen scored 14 points, and Parsons had four points before fouling out.) Amanda “Smiley” Smith came next with six points. Michaele Vock put in five points. Katie Tenboer scored four times. Jodi Medendorp added two more points to the Fillies’ total. Morrison had 13 field goals as a team, while Newman had 17. Neither team could get a three point shot to fall. Both teams attempted the three pointers seven times. Morrison was called for 17 fouls in the game. Newman had 16 fouls. Katie led the team in steals. She had three of them. Abby swiped the ball twice. Heather Andersen and Jodi each stole the ball once. Kate also had the only Filly block in the game. This was one of the few games that Morrison’s been out-rebounded. Newman grabbed 37 boards. Meanwhile, Morrison took 19. Kate co-led the team in this category. She seized five total rebounds, two of those were offensive. Heather chipped in on the boards. She, too, grasped five rebounds. One of those was offensive. Michaele and Amanda each snatched three defensive rebounds, along with one offensive. Abby rounded out the rebounds with two offensive boards. Morrison had just nine turnovers in their 32 minutes of play. The Varsity Fillies moved their records to 5-4 overall, and 2-1 in conference. by larryg |
