F/S Fillies just miss Comets

By: Lindsey Smith
The Newman games for Morrison last Tuesday were big games for both teams. For Varsity, it’s supposed to be Newman and Morrison at the top two slots in conference. For Fresh-Soph, Newman is one of the better teams at that level. If the fresh-soph Fillies could pull off an upset, it’d be a big boost after the rocky start so far this year.

The last time that the F/S Fillies played the Comets was back in the SV Bank Shootout. There they lost by 15 points. They’ve improved since they last time they played Newman and it showed, not just in the ending score.
The Fillies did well throughout the game. Their downfall could’ve been either their turnovers or their rebounding. They were down by seven after the first quarter. Newman put up 12 points, and Morrison scored 5.
The second and third quarters were Morrison’s strongest. They added 12 points in each quarter to pull with in three points and the end of the third. (Newman scored 9 points in the second quarter and 11 in the third.)
The Fillies scored the first points of the fourth quarter to bring it to a one point game: 31-32. That’s the closest that they would get. Newman’s Ashley Vivarelli scored all of their 12 points in the fourth quarter. She was the hot hand of the game, putting in 18 points. The final score was 37-44.
Morrison had just 13 fouls in the game, but Newman bettered them with 12.
Brianne Jensen led Morrison in scoring. She had 10 points. Kelly Tenboer put in 9 points, and Jessica Scott added 8 more. Ashlie Patten scored six points and Brandy Stuart wrapped up the scoring with four. The Fillies combined to make 14 field goals, while Newman made 18. Morrison was 44% from the field in the game. They were also 0 of 3 from the arc.
Morrison was 9 for 16 from the free throw line. Brianne knocked in 4 of her 6 shots. Kelly scored on three of her six attempts. Ashlie cashed in on two of the four shots she got from the free throw stripe. Newman was 3 for 10 from the line.
The Sophomore’s next game will be at Rock Ridge on Saturday the 18th. There they’ll be participating in a tournament. The next home game for the Sophomores is December 21st against Erie. They’ll take the court at 6 o’clock followed by the Varsity.
