Freshmen Fillies Take Season Opener |
| Morrison’s freshmen Fillies pulled out a win on Saturday, November 27th, in their season opener. They were behind Newman at the end of every quarter in the game until in the fourth quarter. At the end of the first quarter, Morrison was down by five points, the score 4-9. They fell further behind in the second quarter, where Newman outscored Morrison 3-4. The halftime score was 7-13. The second half of the game was a different story. The Fillies scored 6 points, and held Newman to just three. In the fourth, Morrison doubled up on the Lady Comets, outscoring them 10-5. The Fillies won the game by two points: 23-21.
Jessica Scott, Ashlie Patten, and Brianne Jensen were played only sparingly during the game, due to the “quarter count” of the season. Jess, however put in 10 points to lead the team in scoring. She knocked in three field goals, and swished 4 of her 9 free throw attempts. Brianne also had a good game. She hit a last second baseline shot to break the tie with time running down. That shot was one of her three field goals that she made. Brianne was 40% from the free throw line, making 2 of her 5 attempts. Ashlie put in one basket to earn her two points in the game. Lindsey was one for three from the free throw stripe and she hit one from outside to bring her to three points for the game. As a team, the Fillies had eight field goals, the same number as Newman. Both teams attempted 17 free throws. Morrison cashed in on 7 of them, while the Lady Comets could make just four. Fouls were close to even. The Fillies had just 15. The Lady Comets totaled up 18 fouls in the game. This game was a Frosh A&B game, which means that following the game, there was a 10 minute running clock fifth quarter, or “B” game. Morrison started out sluggish, letting Newman score 6 times. Tristan Vander Leest put Morrison on the board finally with about 10 left on a steal. Newman tried to inbounds the ball, but Tristan was right there for her second steal and lay-up in about 10 seconds. Newman ended up taking the 5th quarter, 12-4. by lsmith |
