Free throws down F/S Fillies |
| Cold. Hot. Cold. Hot. Morrison’s Fresh-Soph Fillies basketball team went from scoring just three points in the first quarter to 12 in the second. Then they went back down to three points in the third quarter, and up to 11 in the closing quarter. The thing that made the game close was the defense in the second quarter, where the Amboy Lady Clippers couldn’t put any points on the board.
The baskets down in Amboy just weren’t very friendly in the first quarter. The only player that could get any points on the board was sophomore Brandy Stuart. She scored on an elbow shot for two points and sunk one of her free throws to end the scoring for Morrison in the first. In the second quarter it was a completely different ball game. Morrison became more aggressive on defense by trying out the 1-3-1 trapping defense. They boxed out a little bit more than the first quarter. Amboy didn’t score at all in the second quarter. On offense everyone chipped in. Guards found Kelly Tenboer on a diagonal pass that was open every time. Brianne Jensen hit a jumper from the elbow, and Jessica Scott showed off some of her moves in the post. Meanwhile Ashlie Patten brought the ball up without seeming to notice the defense running on her heels. In the third, it was back to just three points. That quarter seemed to take forever. Amboy put up nine more points to regain the lead. The score was now 18-21. In the fourth, the Fillies got fired up again, hopping to retake the lead before game’s end. They put in 11 points this quarter, most of them in the paint from fast breaks or post play. Morrison fell short in that quarter, as Amboy outscored them 11-12, due to free throws. Amboy went on to win the close game 29-33. (Amboy had 15 points in the game from free throws.) Morrison’s Fresh-Soph Filly record is now 2-4 overall and 0-1 in conference. The Fillies shot 33% from the free throw stripe. They were only allowed the trip to the line nine times, and cashed in three of them. Amboy, on the other hand, shot 21 free throws. They made 15 of them, due to their standout player #25. She couldn’t seem to miss! Though Amboy shot many free throws, the Fillies really didn’t have a problem with foul trouble. They only had 13 fouls in the game. Morrison matched its 13 fouls with 13 field goals. All of these were twos. Amboy, lopsidedly, only had 6 two-point field goals in the game. They made 2 threes along with them, but Amboy really won the game at the free throw line. Kelly was the only Filly to make it to double-digit scoring. She put up 10 points off four field goals and two free throws. Brandy had her best game this year. She put up 9 points (a season high). Brandy nailed four field goals, also, and cashed in on one of her free throws. Jessica had another good game. She, too, had four field goals for 8 points. Brianne wrapped up the Filly scoring with two points off of a made elbow shot. The Fresh-Soph Fillies will be taking on the Prophetstown Prophets on Tuesday, the 30th of November. The game will be played at P-town High School starting at 6 o’clock. The Fillies look to move their conference record to 1-1 and their overall record to 3-4. The next time you can catch both the Varsity and the Fresh-Soph Fillies at home is on December 21st when they host the Erie Lady Cardinals. That game will also start at 6. by lsmith |
