Varsity Fillies Start Strong But Fade

After the first quarter, things were looking good for the MHS Fillies Varsity Basketball Team in the first game of the Sauk Valley Bank Shootout. They led the Lady Rockets of Rock Falls by three points. The Fillies looked as though they were on the road for an upset, but then the second quarter came, followed by an 11 point second half for the Fillies.

The second quarter was a completely different game than the first quarter. Rock Falls scored almost 40% of their points in this quarter. They out scored the Fillies 16-5. Morrison cooled off the Rockets’ fire in the 3rd and 4th quarters, only allowing them 8 points in each. Morrison, however, couldn’t get their own shots to fall, as they put up six points in the third quarter and five in the fourth. The ending score of the game was Rock Falls: 42, Morrison: 29.
The hot hand of this game was one of the four sophomores that have been brought up to Varsity. She led the team with 10 points to go along with 6 rebounds (a tie for the team leader of the game in rebounds.) Katie Tenboer had three FT’s and knocked down two of them. Kate also showed some defensive aggression with two steals.
“Going into the game, we stressed execution. The first quarter was exactly what we wanted,” said Katie after her first Varsity season game. “After that, we cooled off, and our shots wouldn’t fall.”
Michaele Vock also had a good game. Michaele is a returning Varsity starter and a Conference Honorable Mention player from the 03-04 season. She had 9 points, to follow Katie, and 6 rebounds. Michaele was 5 for 7 from the FT stripe. Michaele, too, had two steals.
Two of the other sophomores up on Varsity this year scored four points each in the game. Abby Vock is a returning starter and 2nd Team All-Conference 03-04 player. Abby had two rebounds, and was 0-1 from the free throw line. Abby had the only block in the game.
Heather Anderson fouled out of the game, but not until after she stole the ball three times from the Rockets and had grabbed two rebounds. Heather was also 0-1 from the FT line.
Jodi Medendorp was the only other Filly to score. She put in two free throws for two points. Jodi also snatched up three rebounds.
Kelly Tenboer is the fourth sophomore up on Varsity. Kelly pulled down four rebounds for the Fillies.
Erica Sanchez and Jessica Deets also contributed to the rebounding totals with one apiece.
As a team, Morrison out-rebounded the Rockets 25-19. The Fillies also had only 17 turnovers, ten of which were in the first half.
Both teams shot 44 times, but Morrison made only 10 of them, while Rock Falls nearly doubled them with 17 made field goals. The Fillies were 0 for 7 from behind the arc. Rock Falls was 1 for 10 from 3-pt. land.
Katie finished up the game summary with: “There were a lot of positive things that came out of it (the game). We know what we need to work on, and if we execute like I know we can, and go strong to the end, we will succeed.”
