Fillies take 1st conference game 70-32. |
| With all the players finally present, the Varsity Fillies basketball team could at last show how well they intend on doing this year. After just one practice, the only senior on the team came back from the swimming season to score 22 points. She wasn’t alone in the scoring frenzy, though. Joining her with double digits were two sophomores: Abby Vock and Heather Andersen. Amboy had six players score in the game, as did Morrison. However, four of Amboy’s six had two points, and the fifth put up four points. Kaiser, Amboy’s senior point guard, had 20 points, with 12 of them coming from down town.
The first quarter went as planned. The Fillies ran Amboy to a 17-4 first. In the second quarter, both teams added their first quarter score plus four. Heading into the locker rooms, the Fillies had a commanding lead of 26 points, the score 38-12. Morrison settled down a smidgen in the third, where they scored 18 points. Amboy put up 10 more points in each of the third and fourth quarters. They ended the game with 32 total points. The Fillies added 14 points before the buzzer sounded, putting them at a grand total of 70 points. Amanda “Smiley” Smith was the Fillies and game leading scorer with 22 points. She was followed by Abby with 16 points, and Heather with 11 points. Abby scored twice from behind the arc. Michaele Vock was close to the double digits with nine points. Wrapping up the scoring for Morrison was Jodi Medendorp and Katie Tenboer each with six points. As a team, the Fillies had 26 field goals, compared to Amboy’s 11. Michaele shot the most free throws in the game. Of the eight that she put up, she put in five of them. Amanda knocked in six of her seven, while Heather added three more free throws after four tries. Abby nailed two of her four attempts, and Jodi was couldn’t cash in on her single attempt. As a team the Fillies shot 67% from the line, making 16 out of 24. Amboy shot only nine free throws, but they made six of them. The fouls in the game were pretty even. Amboy was called for 20 of them, while the Fillies committed 15. Turnovers were just about as close. Amboy handed the ball back over to Morrison 26 times. The Fillies kept an average tally of 17 T.O.s. Morrison started with 7 of them in the first quarter. In the second they had five, and in the third there was four. In the fourth, however, the Fillies only turned the ball over one time. Morrison shot 55% from the field, making 26 of the 47 shots that they put up. The Fillies were also 2 for 2 from behind the arc. Abby did those honors. Amboy, on the other hand, was 11 for 45, which is 24% field goal percentage. Amboy was 4 for 10 from the three point line. Amanda led the team in steals also. She had four swipes in the game. The Vock sisters helped her out with one apiece. Katie had three of Morrison’s nine assists. Abby and Jodi followed, each with 2. Michaele and Amanda wrapped up the assists with one each. In blocks, Katie also led. She was the only player in the game to block a shot. Nine of the ten Fillies joined in on the rebounding to out-rebound Amboy 33-14. Jodi refused to give up her rebounding column. She led the team in total rebounds going into the game and ended the game with 8 more. Following Jodi was Katie with 6, while Abby snatched four. Three players grabbed three rebounds each. They were Jessica Deets, Amanda, and Michaele. Erica Sanchez, Laura Stralow, and Heather each clutched two rebounds. The Fillies head next to Prophetstown for game number seven of their 15-game “road trip”. This game starts at 6 o’clock, with the Fresh-soph team taking the floor first. Varsity will follow them, at around 7:30. The first home game of the year will be on Tuesday, December 21st. Fresh-soph will take the floor first at 6 o’clock vs. the Erie Lady Cardinals. by lsmith |
