Amanda Smith Signs Letter of Intent at Western IL

On Tuesday, November 16, Amanda “Smiley” Smith signed a letter of intent to swim at Western Illinois University.

Amanda started her swimming career with the Morrison Seahorse Swim Club at the age of 7. As a MSSC member she qualified for State in multiple years. She qualified for Senior Championships at Northwestern in the summer of 2003 in the 50-meter and 100 meter freestyle events.
At the high school level, Amanda has been a varsity letter winner all four years. She received the Rookie of the Year Award in 2001 and the MVP award in both 2002 and 2003. In 2002 she was a member of the 200 Free Relay team along with Rachel Fedyk, Jann Brackemyer, and Emily Seaman. They qualified for State, gaining a MHS record with a time of 1:42.32.
In 2004, Amanda, currently a co-captain of the Fillies swimming team, broke the MHS 200 Free record with a time of 2:02.20 at the Byron Conference meet. She was named to the All Conference swim team in 2003 & 2004. She qualified for State competition in the 50 Free with a time of 24.41 at the Byron Sectional on
November 13, 2004. At the Sectional, she also was a-member of the 200 Free Relay team along with Rachel Fedyk, Kendra Kuehl, and Jamie Grau. The relay team placed first, qualified for State, and obtained a MHS school record of 1:40.56. The 400.FreeRelay team, which included Smith, Fedyk, Kuehl, and Grau, placed 3rd at the Byron Sectional. With a time of 3:45.45, they shattered a previous MHS record, set in 2001, by ten seconds. Amanda also placed 2nd at the Sectional in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:01.73, narrowly missing another State appearance by a half second.
Amanda has also competed at State in two other sports: basketball and track & field. During the 2003 track season, Amanda was a member of the 800 Sprint Medley Relay and the 4 x 200 Relay that qualified for State. Also in 2003, she advanced through Regionals and Sectionals to compete at the State Three-Point Shoot-Out for basketball.
Throughout all four high school years, Amanda has been placed on the High Honor Roll. She was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2004. Amanda is involved in Illinois Math League as well as Student Council. She is the recipient, chosen by classmates and faculty, of the Daughters of the American Revolution Award. Amanda was also chosen for the English Pacesetter Award. Amanda was nominated as the MHS Female recipient of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.
Amanda intends to major in pre-veterinary medicine at Western Illinois University. She plans to attend the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana to complete graduate school.
