Laughter and the Tears, Filly Swimmers Look Back on the Years.

By: Lindsey Smith
The MHS Fillies Swimming Team hosted their final home swim meet last Tuesday. The Fillies had arguably their best meet of the year. This was their Senior Night. The three seniors were honored (well, we like to think of it as honoring, though they, at times, thought it was embarrassing). They were Megan Tenboer, Amanda “Smiley” Smith, and Rachel Fedyk. Morrison dominated the meet, winning every event. They also went one-two whenever they had two swimmers in the same event. The Fillies also pulled off their first one-two-three of the year.

All three seniors were together in the two relays that they swam. In the first of these to relays, the 200-yard medley relay, Morrison smashed any Newman competition. Megan Tenboer led off with the backstroke leg. Jamie Grau followed on the breaststroke, and then Amanda “Smiley” Smith in the butterfly. Rachel Fedyk again anchored the relay with freestyle. The Fillies finished this event in 2:05.71, while Newman finished at 2:20.04.
Sophomores Michelle Bos and Lindsey Smith took first and second in the 200-yard freestyle. They led Newman by yards right after the first 50-yards and held strong to win by over 20 seconds. Lindsey came in first with a time of 2:16.63. Michelle swam a PB (personal best) time of 2:22.14.
Megan was in the pool again for the 200-yard I.M. She won this event by just over six seconds. Her time was 2:36.44. Second place’s time was 2:42.45.
Erica Sanchez and Amanda swam the 50-yard freestyle. Amanda easily won the race by about four seconds. Her clock stopped at 25.53 seconds, a PB. Erica came in second behind Amanda. Her time was a 29.42, just 0.2 seconds ahead of third place.
During the break the swimmers and parents put on a “half-time show”. The seniors’ parents made them posters. The seniors’ teammates presented them with their senior night presents: a white personalized towel with red writing, a camera, a picture frame in the shape of a flip-flop, and flowers. While all this was going on, Scuba Steve read a questionnaire about the three seniors that their teammates had made up for them to answer.
After all of the gift giving, the parents of the seniors asked all to go to the auditorium where there was going to be a slideshow. The slideshow consisted of the three senior swimmers together ranging from when they were 5 to present. During the slideshow, there were a lot of laughs, but as the show neared the end, the laughs turned to tears. Hugs to their parents, teammates, and friends came next, followed by more tears. The senior girls would like to thank Jim Winslow (school Director of Technology) and Mark and Terri Fedyk for making this slideshow possible.
After the senior night festivities, the Fillies headed back to their winning streak. Amanda Smith and Kendra Kuehl were up to the start for the 100-yard butterfly. They finished first and second, with Amanda in the lead. Her time was 1:05.99. Kendra finished her race in 1:13.57.
Rachel and Michelle teamed up for the 100-yard freestyle, where Morrison again finished in first and second. Rachel was untouched throughout the event, as she swam a time of 1:01.55 for first place. Michelle swam a strong race and finished with her time of 1:05.24, just under two seconds ahead of the first Newman swimmer.
The Fillies came away with their first one-two-three of the season in the 500-yard free. Jamie came in first, the clock stopping at 5:51.57, which is close to her PB. Lindsey swam to second in 6:11.95. Christina Justice swam well in her third place finish. She finished in 7:15.42 minutes, one of her better times this year. Newman was 2.96 seconds behind Christina.
In the next race of the night, the 200-yard free relay, Morrison came away again with first and second.
The “A” relay easily won by nine seconds. Their time was 1:54.75. After the lead off by Amanda, there was no touching the Fillies “A” relay. Megan held strong and added to their lead. Kendra followed and did the same as Megan. Rachel anchored the relay with no problem.
Michelle led the “B” relay off to a two second lead. Christina hopped in for the second leg and stayed right with the speedster from Newman. Lindsey moved in front of the Lady Comets swimmer to hand off to Erica with a six second lead. Erica finished the relay for Morrison in 2:11.22.
Megan and Kendra nearly tied each other in the 100-yard back. They finished in slots gold and silver, with an average time of 1:09.69. Kendra finished in first with her own time of 1:09.68. Megan followed 0.02 seconds behind her (1:09.70).
Fillies Rachel and Jamie dove into another blue and red, this one coming in the 100-yard breaststroke. Rachel swam to first with her time of 1:14.88. Jamie was less than four seconds behind her at 1:18.01.
In the final event of the night, Morrison didn’t give up their event-winning streak. The Fillies led off with Michelle, who gave them a four second lead. Lindsey, Kendra, and anchor Jamie, took the lead, expanded it, and never looked back. They won by 16 seconds with a time of 4:24.42.
Morrison won the meet by the widest margin that they’ve seen this season. The final score was 108-57. For our seniors—good luck. We’ll miss you A LOT. Thanks for all that you given to us. You’ll never be replaced.
