Swimmers Take 3rd Place Out of 9 With 6 Swimmers

By: Lindsey Smith
The Fillies hosted the 4th annual Morrison High School Junior Varsity Invitational on Columbus Day. There were nine teams that participated including Morrison, Sterling and Pleasant Valley. As an added bonus for the spectators that were there, there was also the 1st Friends of Morrison Swimming Hall of Fame Induction.

Though having even smaller numbers than usual (Rachel Fedyk and Amanda “Smiley” Smith couldn’t swim because they aren’t consider JV swimmers. Megan Tenboer was gone on a college visit.), the Fillies were still good contenders for one of the three trophies. Last year Morrison only had five swimmers and they placed second.
The Fillies gave off signs of last year’s success in the first event, the 200-medley relay. Kendra Kuehl took to the backstroke. She reached in at the wall and Jamie Grau dove in for the breaststroke. Lindsey Smith was assigned the third leg, the butterfly leg. By the time the Fillies got to Erica Sanchez, their anchor leg, they already had a dominating lead. Erica finished the relay for Morrison in 2:09.59, about ten seconds faster than the second place team.
Jamie got the first Filly individual event victory in the 200-yard freestyle. She swam a 2:13.73. The next closest was about two seconds behind Jamie.
Kendra kept the Morrison dominance going in the third event, the 200-yard I.M. She swam the event in 2:34.04, about seven seconds ahead of second place.
Erica and Michelle Bos swam the 50-yard free. The time span between first place and sixth place as just about half a second. Erica swam one of her best time of 29.63 for third place. Michelle just beat out friend and former classmate Chelsea Mayer of Clinton by .36 seconds for sixth place.
Lindsey tried to get the winning streak going again for Morrison in the 100-yard butterfly. She won it by over half a second. Her time was 1:10.98, less than a second off of the JV record.
Michelle and Erica teamed up again for the next freestyle sprint, the 100. They flip-flopped places, as Michelle swam to second place and Erica finished in fifth. Michelle’s time was 1: 06.59, one of her best times this year. Michelle was un-contended for second place. Erica’s time was 1:07.74, just missing fourth place by 0.14.
Christina was the only Filly to swim the 500-yard freestyle. She finished in 11th place. Christina just missed 10th place by 1.08 seconds. Her time of 7:27.21 was one of her best times this year.
Morrison won the 200-yard freestyle relay. They cleared second place by about four seconds. Their time was 1:57.92. Erica swam the led off leg. Lindsey came next, and then Kendra. Jamie brought the relay home to first place.
Lindsey and Christina were in the 100-back right after the relay. Lindsey finished in third place with a time of 1:15.62. Christina swam her race in 1:25.21. She placed 8th place.
For the final event of the night, Morrison took second. The 400-yard free relay was at first a scary one for the Fillies. Christina led the relay off. She was tired from just swimming the backstroke, so she handed off to Michelle at little behind all the other swimmers. Michelle didn’t pass anyone, but she caught the Fillies up quite a bit to all the other relays in the pool. Kendra then had her turn, in which she swam one of her fastest splits of the year. Kendra passed four of the other relays, leaving only Pleasant Valley ahead of Morrison. Jamie dove in next. She couldn’t catch P.V., but she held on to second place.
Morrison finished in third place with only six swimmers. They beat other teams who numbered close to 20. The Fillies totaled up 201 points. Sterling and P.V. beat them. Good job, girls!
