Mustangs Take Wooden Shoe Bowl in Grand Fashion

It was a beautiful night for football and senior night on Oct. 8, with clear skies and a rivalry that dates back decades. For the past several years, the Fulton Steamers had beaten the Mustangs, keeping the Wooden Shoe Trophy, but this year the Mustangs hosted the match up, and came ready to play.

The first quarter went by rather uneventful, with the Mustang defense pushing the Steamers deep into their own territory, and the Morrison offense not producing. Toward the end of the quarter, Nate Vock threw a great pass downfield to Zach Ashpole, giving the mustangs a 1st and 10 from the Fulton 40. Sammy Biggs had a great run to follow it up, moving all the way to the 20; but the offense was slowed to 4th down, where a short run achieved the first to end the quarter, with Morrison in the red zone.

Sammy Biggs was the first to light up the scoreboard with 6 points with another big run to start off the second quarter, putting the score at 7-0. Soon after, Fulton was stopped by the Mustang defense, and forced to punt, giving Morrison the ball on the Steamer 39. Matt Kistler had a great run to put Morrison near the red zone, but soon after, Nate Vock fumbled, giving Fulton the ball, but the Steamers again were forced to punt it away, where Sammy Biggs took the ball up to the steamer 47; the start of a great Mustang TD drive. Matt Kistler pushed the line of scrimmage to the 39, and Greg Frickenstein took the ball to the 7. Morrison was stopped up to 4th and 1, at the 1, but a great punch in by Marcus Hill put another 6 points on the board, putting the score at 13-0. On the kickoff, Fulton had a big return to the 20, but Morrison got an interception with seconds left in the half.

Early in the third quarter, Morrison scored again, putting the score at 19-0, and on the ensuing drive by Fulton, Greg Frickenstein had a great interception. Morrison punted the ball away shortly after, but Kendal McDearmon had another interception, giving Morrison the ball on the Steamer 30 after another Matt Kistler run to end the 3rd quarter.

Marcus Hill had a great touchdown drive to start off the fourth quarter, putting the score at 25-0, and the Mustang defense again stopped the Steamers on the following drive, led by a great sack by Zach Harridge. On a third and long situation, the Steamers passed the ball deep, and had it picked off by Austin Rickels. Marcus Hill had another great drive, bringing the ball to the 20, which was followed up by a touchdown run by Kendal McDearmon, putting the score at 32-0. Fulton had another attempt at producing on the offensive side, but ended in a punt, giving Morrison the ball at the 40. Brent Beveroth took the ball into the end zone, giving Morrison the lead by 39. With 3 seconds left on the clock and the ball in Fulton’s hands, the Steamers were able to score to break the shutout. The game ended with a score of 39-6.

With this win, the Mustangs will now be in the playoffs, and a win next Saturday against Peru/St. Bede will give them home field advantage. The Mustangs are ranked 4th in the Big Rivers Conference.
