5th Grade Colts Win First Tournament Game 36 – 0 |
| The 5th grade Jr. Tackle Colts traveled to Dixon on Saturday, October 2, to face Amboy in their first Jr. Tackle tournament game. The Colts defeated Amboy 36 – 0 and improved their record to 7 – 0.
Morrison started on defense and the Colts stopped Amboy on three plays. The Colts started a bit shaky on offense, but Brandon Neighbour finally got the ball and broke through for the first down. Mark McDonnell added a 29-yard run with help from a good block by Andy Schaver. With the ball on Amboy’s 9-yard line, Head Coach Bill Onken called for a pass play. Quarterback Danny Dennehey fired to Kelsey Snyder for the TD. The PAT attempt was short, but Morrison led early 6 – 0. Amboy did manage to collect a 1st down on their next series, but tackles by Schaver, Jeremy Brown, and Mark McDonnell, with assists by Logan Keuhl and Brandon Belt, kept Amboy from getting too far downfield. Landon Nelson added a key tackle near the start of the 2nd quarter to end Amboy’s drive. It didn’t take the Colts long to find the end zone again on their next possession. After the Colts lost a few yards on the first play, Dennehey handed off to Neighbour who galloped 76 yards for the TD. Belt caught a pass from Dennehey for the PAT. Morrison led 14 – 0. Amboy put the ball in the air on their next two plays. Luke Brands brought down an Amboy receiver after a short completion. Brands and Dennehey tried hard for the interception on Amboy’s next incomplete pass. Amboy went back to their ground attack after that. Amboy got another 1st down, but Matt McDonnell had a big tackle on the run to save a possible score. Nelson then hit hard and sacked Amboy’s quarterback. Amboy’s possession was over on the next play when Morrison’s Schaver quickly grabbed an Amboy fumble. Coach Onken and the Colts were fired up and wanted to score again before the end of the half. Mark McDonnell and Neighbour carried the ball to Amboy’s 41-yard line. Dennehey then released a long pass to Neighbour who went in for the TD. Mark McDonnell ran the ball across the goal line for the PAT. Morrison ended the 1st half leading 22 – 0. The Colts’ offense was on fire again after halftime. Mark McDonnell led the offensive attack. Mark brought the ball downfield to Amboy’s 34-yard line in two carries. Mark then slipped past Amboy’s defense for a 34-yard run and the TD. The run for the PAT was short. The Colts pulled away 28 – 0. The Morrison defense dominated Amboy in the 2nd half. Mark McDonnell sacked the quarterback on Amboy’s first offensive play of the half. Several Morrison players combined to hit the next Amboy runner hard for a loss. Nelson brought down the quarterback while on the run to end Amboy’s drive. The Colts’ offense found the end zone again on their next series. Brands gained some yards up the middle. Zach Blasdell went wide and added another 16 yards. As the 4th quarter began, Morrison had the ball on Amboy’s 22-yard line. Quarterback Jacob Tegeler fired a pass to Luke Brands who made the catch and crossed the goal line. Brands ran the ball for the PAT. Morrison led 36 – 0. Amboy got the ball next for the last time, but they kept it for only a short time. On Amboy’s first play, Tegeler tripped up the runner and knocked the football loose. Morrison’s Kyle Heusinkveld quickly covered the loose ball. Dan Crebo, Brands, and Tegeler all carried the ball downfield, but time expired before Morrison could score again. The final score of the contest was 36 – 0. Brandon Neighbour led the team in yards with 3 carries for 104 yards, 1 pass reception for 41 yards, and 2 TDs. Other yards were as follows: Mark McDonnell – 9 carries for 107 yards, 1 TD, and 1 PAT; Brands – 3 carries for 22 yards, 1 reception for 22 yards, 1 TD, and 1 PAT; Crebo – 4 carries for 24 yards; Blasdell – 1 carry for 16 yards; Snyder - 1 reception for 9 yards and 1 TD; Belt – 1 reception for 3 yards and 1 PAT; Tegeler – 1 carry for 2 yards. Dennehey was 3 for 3, passing for 53 yards and 2 TDs. Tegeler was 1 for 1, passing for 22 yards and 1 TD. Andy Schaver led the team in tackles with 5 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. Other tackles were as follows: Nelson – 3 tackles; Dennehey, Mark McDonnell, and Matt McDonnell all with 2 tackles and 1 assist each; Tegeler - 2 tackles; Brands – 1 tackle and 1 assist; Brown and Crebo each with 1 tackle; Heusinkveld – 1 assist and 1 fumble recovery; Belt, Kirk and Kuehl all with 1 assist each. The Colts would like to thank the cheerleaders and fans who traveled to Dixon on Saturday. The 5th grade Colts will play the second game of their tournament on Saturday, October 9.
