Cold Rain Can’t Stop Mustang Victory

On the rainy night of October 1, The Mustangs traveled to Erie to face the Erie/Prophetstown Panthers. Most of the game was played in the heavy rain, with strong, cold winds playing against both teams. With the Mustangs coming off a hard loss last week, they were looking for a win, and were ready to fight for it against conference rival Erie/Prophetstown.

The game started off with Mitch Stoermer throwing an interception on the second play from the line of scrimmage, giving the Panthers the ball at the 40. Soon after, EP fumbled and Dustin Vandermyde recovered, but the Stangs were unable to produce, and punted. On the following EP drive, Sammy Biggs knocked down a key 4th and 7 pass to give the mustangs the ball back at the 12-yard line, leaving a lot of work for the offense. Morrison again was forced to punt, but the defense held strong until the end of the first quarter, with a score of 0-0.

Early in the second quarter, the Panthers again fumbled, but Morrison’s offense again was forced to punt, where they recovered the ball again. With the ball on the 15 yard line, Matt Kistler took a sweep into the end zone, putting the fist points of the game on the board but missing the extra point. After another exchange of a fumble by Morrison and a punt by the Panthers, Morrison got the ball with good field position, and with great runs by Matt Kistler and Sammy Biggs, the Mustangs put another 6 points on the board, but this time Nate Vock was able to make the extra point, putting the score at 13-0 going into halftime.

Morrison kicked off the ball to start the second half, and drove hard to score in the opening minutes, but did not make the 2-point conversion. EP attempted the onside kick, but Morrison recovered, but a fumble by Sammy Biggs gave the ball back to EP. EP attempted a 4th down conversion, but was unsuccessful, and gave the ball back to the Mustangs, but soon Matt Kistler fumbled, which was picked up and returned for a touchdown by the panthers. The point after attempt was unsuccessful, which would prove to be critical, leaving the score at 13-12. Zach Ashpole fumbled the kickoff, but Greg Frickenstein recovered an EP fumble on the following drive. The 3rd quarter ended with a score of 13-12.

In the 4th quarter, Morrison’s defense saved the day, because on every attempt, the offense was forced to punt or fumbled. With 2:45 left in the game, EP got the ball back, and drove down the field before being having a turnover on downs with just over a minute left. With 55 seconds left, Morrison tried to take a knee but fumbled, which was recovered by the Panthers, who wasted no time passing the ball way downfield before being stopped and forced to turnover the ball on the defensive stop in the pouring rain and freezing winds. Morrison took a knee, and this time was successful, ending the game with a score of 13-12.

The mustangs are nest in action next Saturday, when they travel down to play Peru/St. Bede on October 9th. This win moves the Varsity record to 4-2, while the J.V. team holds at 5-1. Click Here to see photos from the game.
