5th Grade Colts Win Over Newman, 42-12

The 5th grade Morrison Jr. Tackle Colts’ offense made several big plays, and the Colts collected another win at Newman Thursday evening, September 23. The Colts defeated a good Newman team 42-12 and improved their record to 5 – 0.

The Colts started the game on offense. On the first play of the game, Quarterback Danny Dennehey handed the ball to Brandon Neighbour. For the 4th week in a row, Neighbour sped past everyone and went the full 65 yards for the TD. Mark McDonnell ran the ball in for the PAT. Morrison went ahead quickly 8 – 0.

It appeared that the Colts’ defense was going to stop Newman cold on their first offensive series. Kelsey Snyder and Jacob Tegeler made tackles on the first two Newman plays. Several Morrison players piled on the next Newman runner and forced the 4th down. But on the next play, a quick Newman runner slipped past the Colts defense and got away for the TD. These were the first points scored against the 5th grade Colts this season! Newman’s PAT attempt was no good, and Morrison held onto the lead 8 – 6.

Morrison’s offense was on fire for the next series. Mark McDonnell started the series with an 11 yard run. Neighbour got the ball on the next play and took off. He galloped 53 yards and got another TD. Mark McDonnell ran for another PAT. Morrison pulled ahead 16 – 6.

The Colts’ defense got a little revenge on the next Newman possession. Landon Nelson, Kyle Heusinkveld, Dennehey, and Andy Schaver all hit hard for tackles. Mark McDonnell brought down Newman’s quarterback for a big loss of yards. On the next play, Andy Schaver grabbed a Newman loose ball for a fumble recovery. The 1st quarter ended with Morrison in possession of the football.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, Neighbour once again slipped past all Newman defenders and raced 47 yards for the TD. Mark McDonnell carried the ball across the goal line for the PAT. Morrison led 24 – 6.

Newman wouldn’t keep the ball for long. After another good tackle from Nelson, Heusinkveld picked off a Newman pass on the next play. With help from a key block by Mark McDonnell, Heusinkveld gained 16 yards. Mark McDonnell and Dennehey brought the ball further downfield. Neighbour carried the ball the remaining 4 yards and got the TD. The pass attempt for the PAT was incomplete. Morrison pulled away 30 – 6.

Brandon Belt, Mark McDonnell, Logan Kuehl, and Nelson all collected tackles to end Newman’s next drive and the 1st half.

In the 3rd quarter, Quarterback Dennehey fired a pass to Tegeler for a short gain. Neighbour carried the ball on the next play. With good blocking from Mark McDonnell and Tegeler, Neighbour raced 55 yards for the TD…his 5th TD of the night. Morrison’s PAT attempt was no good. Morrison led 36 – 6.

Near the end of the 3rd quarter, Newman looked tired. It appeared the Colts were going to hold Newman again for three and out. But on 3rd down, the same Newman speedster escaped the Colts’ defense and scored on a long run. Newman’s pass attempt for the PAT was no good. The Colts held the lead 36 – 12.

At the beginning of the 4th quarter, the Colts’ offense came up with yet another big play. Quarterback Tegeler handed off to Mark McDonnell. Mark’s brother Matt provided some nice blocking. Mark carried the ball to the end zone for a 57-yard run. The run for the PAT was short. Morrison pulled away 42 – 12.

Newman now had possession of the football for the last time. Near the end of the game, Newman put the ball in the air. Brown got a hand on the quarterback during the release, and Dennehey picked off the pass. Morrison had the football again, but the clock showed zero time left.

Head Coach Bill Onken commented that the Newman team was very tough. He felt Newman was the toughest team the Colts have faced yet. Coach Onken was pleased with the offensive production and the blocking was good.

Brandon Neighbour led the team in rushing yards with 5 carries for 224 yards and 5 TDs. Other yards were as follows: Mark McDonnell – 11 carries for 108 yards, 1 TD and 3 PATs; Dennehey – 2 carries for 7 yards, 1 interception for 5 yards; Heusinkveld – 1 interception for 16 yards; Tegeler - 1 reception for 4 yards. Dennehey was 1 for 3, passing for 4 yards.
