Fillies Fall in Duel Against Sterling

The Fillies had another home meet on September 14th. This one was against the powerhouse Sterling. Sterling brought over 22 swimmers, compared to the Fillies eight that they have on the team. Morrison, despite the difference in numbers, stayed close with Sterling throughout the night.

In the first event of the night, Morrison sent out Megan Tenboer, Jamie Grau, Kendra Kuehl, and Erica Sanchez for the 200-yard medley relay. Megan swam the backstroke and led the way into the wall. Jamie dove in after her, doing the breaststroke. Jamie stretched for the timing pads and when she touched just behind Sterling, Kendra jumped in. She swam the butterfly leg. Kendra held the second place standing for Morrison into the wall for the anchor leg of freestyle. Erica swam one of her fastest splits this year, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Sterling “A” relay. Morrison’s time was 2:08.22, less than two seconds behind Sterling.
Jamie was in the 200-yard free, which was directly after the relay she had just swum. Joining Jamie in this event were Amanda “Smiley” Smith and Christina Justice. Amanda went on to win the race with a time of 2:06.57. She won by about 6 seconds over the next closest swimmer, who was from Sterling. Jamie cam in third, she was just out touched by Ellie Eshleman of Sterling. Jamie’s time was 2:13.32. The next closest swimmer, of Sterling was almost 20 seconds behind Jamie. Christina finished in 5th place. Her time was 2:44.30, beating a trailer by 13 seconds.
Megan Tenboer and Lindsey Smith hit the water in the third event of the night, the 200-yard I.M. Megan’s time would have been 2:34.54, but she was disqualified on a flip turn. She was attempting to do a side turn from back to breast, but turned over to far on her stomach before reaching the wall to flip. Megan would have gotten third place. She was off of second place by about four seconds. Lindsey ended up getting third place after Megan’s disqualification. Her time was 2:40.52.
The Fillies were able to have another trio swim in the same event. Usually they only have enough swimmers to have two in each event. The 50-yard free was the closest race of the night between Morrison and Sterling. Rachel Fedyk, of Morrison, reached the touch pads 0.28 seconds before Christina Yemm (Sterling) for the win. Rachel’s time was 26.00. Erica was also in this event. She came in fourth with a time of 30.17. Erica missed third place by less than a second. Following Erica was Michelle Bos. Michelle’s time was 30. 93. She beat the Sterling swimmer behind her by just over a second.
After the 15-minute break, Amanda came back to the pool for another win. This time it was in the 100-yard butterfly. She swam a 1:04.65, beating the competition by over a second. Kendra was also in the butterfly. She swam the event in 1:14.88, enough for fourth place. Kendra was behind third by 8.3 seconds, but she was ahead of fifth by over 10 seconds.
Michelle and Erica were back at the edge of the pool for another freestyle sprint event. This one’s distance was 100 yards. Michelle came in second, behind Sterling’s Christina Yemm. Michelle’s time was 1:08.37, while Erica’s time was 1:10.35. Erica came in right behind Michelle to grab third for the Fillies. Erica had just out reached a Sterling swimmer by 0.99 seconds.
Morrison had their last event with three swimmers in it when the 500-yard free came up to the “blocks” (There are no blocks in the racing portion of the Morrison High School pool. The swimmers just dive in off of the side). Jamie, Lindsey and Christina were the Fillies sent to swim this race. Jamie won it with a time of 5:51.16. She beat Sterling’s Mary Wolber by six seconds. Lindsey came in third, after Mary. Lindsey’s time was 6:06.55. The 4th place swimmer was from Sterling and was 42 seconds behind Lindsey. Christina came in 5th. Her time was 7:21.02.
The next event was the only relay that Morrison won in the duel meet. The 200-yard free relay finished with a time of 1:51.75. Amanda led off and again handed the led over to the second leg swimmer. Kendra went off the side once Amanda touched and held the led to send Erica into the water. Erica gave up a little ground, giving the Sterling swimmers something to cheer for, but she still held the led for Rachel. Rachel pulled away from Sterling, widening the led to two seconds at the finish.
Morrison’s “B” relay in the 200-yard free relay came in third. Michelle led off and touched the wall at third behind Morrison “A” and Sterling “A”. Christina went for the swim in the second leg. There she lost ground and gave up third to Sterling “B”. Megan dove in for the third leg. She passed the Sterling “B” relay swimmer to give Lindsey, Morrison’s anchor, a three second lead. Lindsey held on to third for Morrison and finished with the relay’s time of 2:05.92. They beat Sterling “B” by about five seconds.
Kendra and Megan were the next Fillies to swim. They swam the 100-yard backstroke, where Kendra broke the first Morrison fresh/soph Filly record. She won the race with a time of 1:09.36. The record was about a second slower than that. The first four swimmers to finish were all within a second of each other. Megan finished fourth with a time of 1:10.23. Megan just missed third place by 0.03 seconds.
Rachel was back in action for the next event up, the 100-yard breaststroke. Rachel won the event by three seconds. Her time was 1:16.82. Rachel was the only Filly to swim in this event.
The final race of the evening was the 400-yard free relay. After a good lead from Amanda, who swam the first leg, the Fillies slowly gave up their first place position to Sterling. Amanda touched at the wall and Lindsey dove in, three seconds ahead of the Sterling swimmer next to her. By the time Lindsey got to her exchange with Jamie, the Sterling relay had crept up to within a second. Jamie also gave up ground, as the Sterling swimmer past her on the last 25, giving the Sterling relay a one second lead. Rachel was the Fillies anchor, but she couldn’t gain any on Christina Yemm of Sterling. Morrison settled for second with a time of 4:00.96. The next closest relay was 36 seconds behind, thought Sterling “A” won the event by three seconds.
Morrison ended the meet with a score of 79 points to Sterling’s 89. Congratulations to Kendra on breaking the first pool record of the year. Keep up the good work!
