Morrison Mustangs Take Big Win Over Rams |
| The Mustangs went on the road for their second game of the season, playing the Riverdale Rams on Friday, September 3. As usual, Morrison brought with them a huge following, almost matching that of the home team. With a huge win last week in Ottawa, the Mustangs came into this game fired up and ready to play.
Morrison kicked off to start the game, but forced the Rams to go 3 and out. Morrison had trouble getting started on defense with many penalties and a sack to Stoermer. This led to a fumbled snap by Sammy Biggs on the punt, giving the Rams great field position. Morrison’s crushing defense again held them to go 3 and out, punting the ball and giving Morrison field position on their own 27. Matt Kistler had a great run, but Morrison ended up punting. In the second quarter, much of the same went on, with Morrison’s defense not allowing a first down, and with the offense struggling. Morrison had a few great runs by Sammy Biggs and Matt Kistler, but they were not able to capitalize and put points on the board. The half ended with both teams deadlocked and a score of 0-0. In the second half, Morrison came out strong with a great reception by Kendal McDearmon, putting the ball up on the Riverdale 40. The Mustangs had a great drive, getting 2 first downs, but ended up punting the ball away. The Mustang defense again crushed any drive from Riverdale, and forced them to punt while deep in their own territory. Morrison had great field position, and Ryan Schisler had a great run to the 43-yard line, but the drive was stopped when Mitch Stoermer threw an interception. On the ensuing Riverdale drive, Morrison forced and recovered a fumble, putting the offense back out on the field, where Stoermer was again sacked for a big loss. On the opening play of the 4th quarter, Sammy Biggs had a breakaway run, and took it across the field 85 yards for the first touchdown of the game. Matt Hook put in the extra point, giving Morrison the lead, 7-0. On the following Riverdale drive, Kendal McDearmon had a big sack, which forced them to again punt. Later in the quarter, Morrison had a very strong drive, marching the ball all the way across the field, and was topped off by a 40-yard run by Sammy Biggs for another Touchdown, but the extra point was missed, putting the score at 13-0. Morrison’s defense again held the Rams, taking the ball back on downs, not letting the Rams get a first down, and allowing Mitch Stoermer to take a knee to end the game. Morrison’s defense didn’t allow a first down all night, which hasn’t been done in years. The Mustangs are next in action nest Friday, when they play host to Tuscola instead of River Valley, who forfeited because they couldn’t fill a varsity team. by larryg |
