5th Grade Colts Win 24 – 0

The Colts offense scored on the 1st play of the game against Amboy on Saturday, August 28. From that point on, the 5th Grade Morrison Jr. Tackle Colts seemed to control the game as they went on to win 24 – 0.

Fullback Brandon Neighbour scored a touchdown on a 65-yard run on the very first play of the game. Neighbour got the ball again and crossed the goal line for the PAT. Morrison led 8 – 0. Amboy was unable to move the ball, and their first offensive series was ended by a big 3rd down tackle from Mark McDonnell. McDonnell scored a touchdown in Morrison’s next possession with a 44-yard run. Neighbour was back in the end zone for the PAT. The Colts were up quickly 16 – 0. On defense, key tackles were made by Landon Nelson and Danny Dennehey.

In the second quarter, Luke Brands got downfield on a 12-yard run, but Morrison was unable to score. Amboy’s next possession ended quickly with a broken play after a bad snap and a big tackle from Morrison’s Matt McDonnell to end their drive. Morrison would score again on the next series. After a 10-yard run, Quarterback Danny Dennehey pitched the football to Jacob Tegeler who added 13 more yards to the play. Tegeler rushed for 12 more yards on the following play. A good run up the middle from Mark McDonnell put the Colts near the goal line. Dennehey took the ball in for the score. Dennehey fired the ball to Brandon Belt for a nice catch and the PAT. The score was now 24 – 0.

Head Coach Bill Onken, Defensive Coach Larry Brown, and Assistant Coaches Hal Snyder and Dean Walters got everyone into the game in the second half. Quarterback Jacob Tegeler handed off to Zach Blasdell who broke loose for a 33-yard run. Luke Brands added some yards with some running up the middle. But, the Colts offense did not score in the 3rd quarter. The defense kept hitting hard with big tackles from Andy Schaver and Tom Kirk.

The defense continued to dominate in the 4th quarter. Morrison fumbled the ball early in the 4th quarter, but the defense prevented Amboy from benefiting on the turnover. Tackles from Andy Schaver, Mark McDonnell and Kelsey Snyder kept Amboy contained. Jeremy Brown made a nice catch on a pass from Jacob Tegeler to keep the ball moving in the 4th quarter.

Defensive Coach Larry Brown commented that the defense hit hard and played well. He noted that the kids work hard in practice, which helps a lot in the games. Head Coach Bill Onken was please with the big blocks on offense. He said the defensive ends did a good job. Coach Onken added that the offensive line also did a good job.

Andy Schaver led the team in tackles with 4 tackles and 2 assists. Other tackles were as follows: Matt McDonnell – 3 tackles, 1 assist; Dennehey – 3 tackles; Tom Kirk – 2 tackles, 2 assists; Mark McDonnell – 2 tackles, 2 assists; Seth Buckwalter – 2 tackles, 1 assist; Shane Vos – 1 tackle, 2 assists; Logan Kuehl, Neighbour, Nelson, Snyder and Tegeler all with 1 tackle; and Jeremy Brown with 1 assist.

Brandon Neighbour led the team in rushing yards with 6 carries for 88 yards and 1 TD. Other yards were as follows: Mark McDonnell – 4 carries for 61 yards and 1 TD; Brands – 8 carries for 34 yards; Blasdell – 2 carries for 31 yards; Tegeler – 2 carries for 25 yards; Dan Crebo – 4 carries for 16 yards; Dennehey - 3 carries for 14 yards and 1 TD; Brown – 1 catch for 6 yards; and Belt – 1 catch for 3 yards and the PAT. Dennehey was 1 for 1 with a 3-yard completion for a PAT, and Tegeler was 1 for 2 with a 6-yard pass completion.

The 5th Grade Morrison Jr. Tackle Colts are in action at home against Dixon – White this Saturday, September 4. The game will be played at 10 am on the Morrison High School field.
