The first quarter started with Morrison holding Sterling with no first down on their opening drive. However, Morrison soon gave the ball back with a fumble on their opening drive. Both teams played a somewhat shaky first quarter.

In the second quarter, Morrison started to come together. The defense held Sterling throughout the quarter. Key tackles were made by Kyle Heusinkveld, Danny Dennehey and Max Koch. The Morrison running game also got going in the second quarter. But the score remained 0 – 0 at the end of the half.

Head Coach Bill Onken felt the 5th grade Colts took control of the game in the 3rd quarter. Morrison had good runs right up the middle from Brandon Neighbour and Mark McDonnell to put Morrison near Sterling’s 20-yard line. Quarterback Danny Dennehey then handed off to Jacob Tegeler who scored a touchdown on a 21 yard run. Dennehey ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion. Morrison was in the lead 8 – 0. The Colt’s defense was very tough holding Sterling once again. The defense was fired up with hard hits from Landon Nelson and Matt McDonnell.

Under the guidance of defensive coach Larry Brown, the defense kept up the good work in the 4th quarter. Tackles from Riley Coffey, Danny Dennehey, Dan Crebo, and Mark McDonnell kept Sterling contained. With Sterling at 4th down and 2, Morrison’s Andy Schaver took down a Sterling runner behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 2 yards. Morrison then gained yardage with running from Brandon Neighbour, Mark McDonnell, and a 14-yard run from Danny Dennehey. Dennehey fired a 10-yard pass to Brandon Belt who caught the ball in the end zone for the touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed and Morrison was up 14 – 0. Sterling got the ball back and tried to move the ball downfield. But a tackle from Kyle Heusinkveld for a loss, and big tackles on the run from both Brandon Belt and Kelsey Snyder ended the drive and the game.

Coach Onken praised the team’s defense for keeping Sterling contained. He also saw good blocking on the line and was pleased with the running game up the middle. Kyle Heusinkveld, Andy Schaver, and Danny Dennehey led the team with 4 tackles each. Dennehey was credited with a sack. Brandon Neighbour led the team in rushing with 57 yards.

The 5th grade Colts are in action again next Saturday, August 28. The game is against Amboy and will be played at 10:00 am at the Amboy Middle School.
