Fillies win Morrison Invite

On Saturday the Fillies invited Dakota, Eastland, and Rockridge to town for annual Morrison invite. Morrison beat Dakota in the first game 5-0. Eastland lost to Rockridge in the second game with a score of 2-3. Eastland then played Dakota for third place in a 13-inning marathon that was won by Eastland 4-3. Morrison won 1-0 over Rockridge to take first place.

The Fillies started to first game with Monica Wright pitching and Jodi Medendorp catching. Dakota threw Karen Lynford. Wright struck out the first three batters retiring the side. Breanna Milnes had the first hit of the game only to be left on base. Wright struck out three more in the second and three in the third. Michaele Vock reached on an error but was left on. The bottom of the third started with Amanda Wiersema and Laura Kophamer taking a walk. With one out Milnes had a stand up triple to left that scored two. Kelsey Dykema reached on an error. Tricia Deter grounded to second to push in Milnes.

Breanna Milnes came in to pitch in the fourth. She struck out the first two batters with seven pitches. The next batter had a double to center. The next batter went down looking. In the bottom of the forth Katie Kuehl had a grounder right over the third base bag that she turned into a double. Kuehl was moved to third when Amanda Wiersema grounded over the first base bag. Kuehl scored when Kophamer grounded into a fielder’s choice that took out Wiersema. Wright grounded out to second to end the inning.

Bowers led off in the fifth with a hit to right. She thought Leanne Smith misplayed the ball and tried for the double only to be picked off by a perfect throw from Smith. Milnes retired the side with two more K’s. Milnes walked to start the bottom and advanced to third on a hit from Kelsey Dykema. She scored on a passed ball.

Milnes struck out one in the sixth and two in the seventh and that was all the Fillies needed for the win.

Monica Wright struck out nine. Breanna Milnes struck out eight, had a triple, a hit, and two RBIs. Kelsey Dykema had a hit. Tricia Deter had a RBI. Katie Kuehl had a double. Amanda Wiersema had a hit. Laura Kophamer had one RBI.

The championship game would be Morrison vs. Rockridge. Morrison would start with Monica Wright pitching and Jodi Medendorp catching. Rockridge had Melissa Krueger pitching and Briana Martin catching. The first batter Wright was behind in the count with three balls, but battled back for the K. She struck out the next two to end the inning. Morrison’ first two batters struck out. Milnes reached on an error, but was left standing. In the second Rockridge started with a single only to be left with a K, a fly ball to center and another K. The Fillies went three up; three down in there half.

Wright struck out the first batter in the third, but walked the next one. A SAC bunt and a stolen base left a runner on third with two outs. The next batter walked. With runners on the corners Rockridge’ number three batter grounded back to Wright to end the inning. Kuehl reached on an error for the Fillies in the bottom but was put out in a fielder’s choice by Kophamer. Kophamer stole second only to be left on base.

The fourth for Rockridge went three up, three down. Kelsey Dykema gave Morrison their first solid scoring opportunity with a rocket down third base line for a triple. Tricia Deter put down the bunt put Dykema was held to third. Jodi Medendorp had a grounder to second that went through the fielders legs for the error that scored Dykema.

Rockridge had a chance in the top of the seventh when Lee Murrin grounded up the middle. They put down the SAC and moved her to second. Wright threw a riser that Medendorp could not handle for a passed ball that moved the runner. Wright and Medendorp settled down and struck out the side for the win.

Wright struck out sixteen, walked three, and gave up two hits. Kelsey Dykema had Morrison’ only hit that was a triple.
