The Morrison Varsity Fillies win 1-0

On an extremely windy afternoon the Morrison Varsity Fillies beat Erie-Prophetstown (EP) for their ninth conference win. Monica Wright gave up four hits, striking out thirty in a fourteen-inning marathon on the way to the Fillies win, with Jodi Medendorp behind the plate. Chelsea Jaquet was pitching for EP, striking out sixteen, with Wendy Wigant catching.

The first inning was three up, three down for both teams. Kelsey Dykema started the second with a walk and was moved to second on a hit by Jodi Medendorp, but both were left on base. Monica Wright picked up two strike outs and Breanna Milnes fielded a grounder for the third out in the bottom of the second. In the third Wright had a ground rule double on a hit to right with two out. Breanna Milnes and Kelsey Dykema walked. Dykema was put out unassisted by second base on the fielders choice by Tricia Deter. Wright took out EP with three Ks.

Jodi Medendorp led off the fourth with a walk and was moved to second on a SAC from Brittany Smith. She advanced to third on a passed ball, but was left standing when Leanne Smith struck out. Wendy Wigant led off the fourth for EP with a hit to center that the wind made it impossible for Amanda Wiersema to catch. Frothing put down the bunt and it was mishandled leaving runners on second and third. Jodi Medendorp squeezed the foul pop up for the first out. Wright checked the runner and was able to get Jaquet out at first. The next batter went down on three pitches for the last out.

The fifth through tenth belonged to the pitchers with Morrison getting six runners put on with walks only to be left standing. Rosenow had a hit in the eight and Wigant had a hit in the ninth for EP, but those were the only runners EP could get on base.

The eleventh started when Brittany Smith walked. Leanne Smith took a wild pitch and a passed ball on the way to her walk. Michaele Vock put down the bunt, with B Smith heading home, EP came up with the double play. Wright walked and Breanna Milnes was put out by a remarkable catch by the right fielder. EP’ catcher had her third hit of the night with two outs only to be left standing when Wright recorded another K.

Medendorp walked in the twelfth with two out only to be left when EP’ Pratt, at third, fielded a sharp grounder by Laura Kophammer. The bottom for EP was three up, three down. The thirteenth was the same for both three up, three down.

Wright took a walk to start the fourteenth. Milnes bunted and reached on an error that put her on second and Wright on third. Dykema struck out, Deter grounded to short, shortstop looked at third and threw to first for the out and the first baseman threw home. Wright was safe for the run. Medendorp fouled out to first for the third out. With a one run lead the Fillies knew what they had to do. EP first batter took Wright to a full count only to get caught looking. Wright and Medendorp knew the next batter to well having three hits. First pitch was a ball, next Wigant fouled one off. Wright shook off the sign from Medendorp until she got what she wanted, a change up that floated in for a strike. Again Wright shook off the sign until Medendorp made the right choice, another change up. This one got away from Medendorp, but she focused on the ball and put her out a first. The next batter went down on three pitches that gave the Fillies the win.

Wright had a double and a hit. Medendorp had one it. Deter brought in Wright. B Smith had a SAC.
