Mustangs Travel to Amboy for an Exciting Night |
| On February 14, 2004, the Boys’ Basketball teams traveled to Amboy to play the Clippers in one of their final games of the season. Amboy was one of the teams that the Mustangs thought they had a good chance of winning against after losing to them earlier in the season. After seeing the Frosh/Soph team lose by 12, the Varsity team tried to give their huge following a reason for coming.
Amboy came out to a quick 4-0 lead, but Luke Goessman came out and dropped 2 free throws to stay in the game. Later in the first, Morrison took the lead, 6-5, but the Clippers were quick to return to the lead, gaining as many as 5 points on the Stangs in the first. Morrison came back in the last few minutes, bringing the score to 18-16, with Amboy in the lead, but still anyone’s game. John Kenseth and Luke Goessman led the opening scoring with 6, followed by Dan Brewer and Casey Tiesman with 2. In the second quarter, Morrison brought the game to a tie on their opening possession, but Amboy would not settle with being tied, regaining the lead, then increasing it to a score of 22-18. Later in the quarter, Amboy had a lot of fouls, letting Morrison climb to within 1 at 27-28, and then a layup by Joe Mills gave Morrison the lead again with a score of 29-28. In the final seconds of the half, Amboy scored once to take the lead by 1 with a score of 30-29 at the half. In the second quarter, Tiesman had 4 points, Vock had 3, and Mills, Goessman, and Sharp all had 2. The third quarter started out in the same fashion as the second, with Morrison immediately regaining the lead, with a score of 31-30. Amboy once again returned to the lead, and brought their score to 36, which is where Morrison would catch them again with a 3 pointer from Joe Mills. Amboy later regained the lead but Morrison took their turn in front when the Mustangs brought their score to 40, leaving Amboy at 39.The volley of the lead continued throughout the third, with a score of 44-43 at the end of the 3rd, with Amboy once again ahead by 1. Mills had 5 points, followed by Matt Vandermyde with 4, Kenseth with 3, and Goessman with 2. In the fourth quarter, both teams held each other in a stalemate until 2 minutes into the quarter, when Jon Kenseth dropped in a 3 pointer, to give Morrison the lead once again. Soon after, the Clippers took the lead by 5, but Morrison came back to within 3, but with 42.7 seconds left on the clock, Amboy still had the lead, 56-51. Through a lot of fouling at the end to stall the clock, Morrison let Amboy score 5 more points in addition to the 56 that they already had, putting Amboy at 61, and Morrison at 51 at the end of the game. Morrison only scored 8 points in the fourth, which came from Kenseth with 3, Vock and Matt Vandermyde with 2, and Brewer with 1. The Mustangs are in action again next Friday, February 21, at Prophetstown, and their final game of the season will come on the following Saturday at Fulton by larryg |
