Mustangs Will Not Go Down Without a Fight

On Friday, February 13, 2004, the Mustangs hosted the Erie Cardinals for their final home game of the season. The Mustangs played to a standing room only crowd and fortunately, the fans saw a great game. This was also senior night for all MHS extra curricular participants for all events except Girls' Basketball.

In the first quarter, the Cards were the first to strike scoring a layup, which would be all for scoring for the next 4 minutes. Finally, at the end of the first, Morrison scored to tie, and the Mustangs took the lead 15 seconds later with a score of 4-3. In the final minutes, there was a lot of scoring, but Erie came out on top with a score of 8-6. Scoring came from Goessman, Brewer, and Tiesman, all with 2 points. In the second quarter, Tiesman started off what would be a productive quarter for Morrison, scoring a 3, to put the score at 11-10 with 6:44 left. Later in the quarter, Matt Vandermyde raised the score to 17-14. Morrison eventually raised their lead to 5, but in the final minute of the half, Erie put in a few quick 3 pointers, taking the lead, 25-22. Scoring was led by Matt Vandermyde with 8, followed by Tiesman with 5, Goessman and Vock with 2, and Houzenga with 1.

In the second half, Erie continued to build on their lead, putting the score at 31-26 in the first 2 minutes. Both teams continued to fight hard, playing a very fast paced game. By the end of the 3rd quarter, Erie was ahead by 9 with a score of 43-34. Tiesman led the scoring with 4, followed by Goessman, Sharp, and Matt Vandermyde with 2. In the final quarter of the game, Morrison fell downhill as Erie took control of the game, only letting the Mustangs score once in the first 3 minutes of the quarter. The Cardinals increased their score to 50 midway through the quarter, causing Morrison to take a time out and reorganize. Erie took out their starters with 2 minutes on the clock, with a score of 59-41. The final score of the game was 59-46. Tiesman led the 4th quarter scoring with 4, followed by Vock with 3, Mills and Doug Vandermyde with 2, and Goessman with 1. Morrison had 23 turnovers in the game, and shot 17 of 50, just 35%. Morrison did well from the line, shooting 11 for 17. Next Friday night the Mustangs travel to Prophetstown for the final game of the regular season.
