Mustangs Stomped by Boilers

The MHS winter sports season is almost done, with only the Boys Basketball teams still in action, other than championship bound Wrestlers and Pons. On Tuesday, February 10, 2004, the Mustangs hosted their second to last home game in a non-conference matchup against the Kewanee Boilers. The Mustangs held strong in the first quarter, taking the lead at one point, but turnovers and bad shooting gave Kewanee the win.

In the beginning of the game, Kewanee struck first, with a 3-pointer, but Morrison came right back, putting in 2 field goals to take the lead by 1. Two free-throws by Joe Mills put the Mustangs in the lead, 6-2, but soon the boilers came roaring back, putting the score at 11-18 at the end of the quarter. Mills, Goessman, Tiesman, Sharp, and M. Vandermyde all had 2 points, while Brewer had 1. In the second quarter, the Mustangs continued to pressure the Kewanee offense, but Morrison became plagued with turnovers, leaving the Boilers to take a commanding lead. At one point in the quarter, the Mustangs came to within 5 points at 25-20, but Kewanee came back taking the lead by 8 at the half with a score of 34-26. Goessman led the scoring with 9 points, followed by Brewer, Sharp, and Vock all with 2. In the first half, Morrison was 7 for 22 in the field, just 32%.

In the third quarter, Morrison again showed a lot of determination, but the turnovers and severe lack of putting the ball in the basket led to Kewanee increasing their lead to 29 by the end of the third with a score of 50-31. Scoring was from Sharp with 3, and Goessman with 2. In the fourth quarter, Morrison took out all of their starters, and let the second string take a shot at Kewanee. They were successful in one part, having almost doubled the points scored in the previous quarter. Scoring in the final quarter came from Sharp with 4 and D. Vandermyde with 4. The final score for the game was 70-40, in Kewanee’s favor. Morrison was just 4 for 20 in the second half, putting the game total at 11 for 32 from the field, meaning that they shot about 25%, as opposed to Kewanee’s 51%.
