Varsity Fillies Take Out Erie at Home

On January 8th, The Varsity Girls played their second home game against the Erie Cardinals. The fillies came out to a 5-1 lead but the Cardinals soon came back to tie the score at seven.

Early in the first quarter, the score became tied up at 7 for the remainder of the first quarter. With 17 seconds to go, Kelli Nelson drained a 2 point shot to break the stalemate. Morrison came back before the end of the quarter on a breakaway, scoring another 2 points, giving then an 11-7 lead going into the second quarter. The 11 points were put up as follows: Amanda Smith with 4, Abby Vock with 3, Michaele Vock for 2, and Kelli Nelson for 2. In the second, the girls didn’t waste any time scoring against the Cardinals, quickly increasing their score to 17, while only letting the Cards score 3. In the later part of the 2nd, Morrison let the Cardinals score 5, while the Fillies put on another six, increasing their lead to 8, with a half time score of 23-15 Scoring in the second was by Abby Vock for 5, Michaele Vock for 3, Kelli Nelson for 3, and Amber Heller for 2 .

Morrison came out strong from the half, and Erie just couldn’t keep up from that point on. An early three pointer by Kelli Nelson got the crowd excited, and with 4:30 to go in the third, Morrison more than doubled Erie’s score, 31-15. By the end of the third, the score was 37-20. Scoring in the third was led by Michaele Vock with 7, followed closely by Kelli Nelson, scoring two 3 pointers, then Amanda Smith scoring a free throw. In the 4th quarter, Morrison built their lead up, and with a 2 minutes left to play, Coach Mark Ernst took out all the starters, replacing them with the Freshmen and Spohomores who spent most of the varsity games on the bench. Heather Andersen was put in and fouled quickly, so she capitalized on the moment and scored so her name would be in the books for a Varsity Game. Other scoring in the 4th was by Kelli Nelson for another three, followed by Michaele and Abby Vock, and Leanne Smith all scoring two, along with Heather Andersen’s free throw in the final minute to put the final score at 47-38.
