Morrison Mustangs Come Close |
| Morrison traveled to Erie to face the Cardinals on January 6th, 2004. Having won only one game all season, many had very low expectations about the outcome of the game that night, but Morrison fans filled the stands nonetheless.
The game started out rough, with Erie jumping out to an early 5-1 lead, but Morrison soon came together and put 14 points on the board by the end of the first quarter, to trail the Cardinals by 4. Casey Tiesman led the scoring in the first quarter with 6, while Luke Goessman and Matt Vandermyde trailed with 4 points apiece. In the second quarter, Morrison held a tight defensive game, while at the same time their offense brought them closer and closer to Erie’s score. With 3 minutes to go in the quarter, Morrison came to within 3 points of the Cardinals, but ended up down by 8 at the half, their biggest deficit of the game so far. Nathan Vock and Matt Vandermyde both had 4 points in the second quarter. Luke Goessman trailed them with a pair, and Brad Sharp put in a free throw, putting Morrison’s half time score at 25, behind Erie’s 33. Morrison came out of the locker room a bit sluggish, and let Erie increase their lead to 12. Casey Tiesman’s deadly accuracy in the later part of the third quarter put up 8 points for Morrison, along with Luke Goessman’s three pointer and Nathan Vock’s free throw, to close the gap to within 5 at the end of the third with a score of 37-42. To start out the fourth, Morrison came out with a quick scoring run, which closed the gap to within 1 point before letting Erie score once. Soon Erie came back and led by three, with a score of 49-46, with time running out for Morrison. With all the pressure on Morrison, many shots were missed in the final minutes, while scoring on Erie’s side of the ball continued. Individual scoring was led by Matt Vandermyde with 6, Nathan Vock with 4, Dan Brewer with two, and finally Luke Goessman with a free throw. The game ended with a final score of 57-50 in one of the best games that Morrison had played all year, finally coming together as one, and being productive on both sides of the ball.
