Varsity Girls Lose in Overtime to Prince of Peace

Before the snow started to fall on the night of January 3rd, the Mustangs and Fillies played their first games of the year double-header style at Prince of Peace High School in Clinton.

The Fillies played first, and held a tight game throughout. In the first quarter, Amanda smith scored two points from free throws, and Michaele Vock scored 4 points from the field, putting the Fillies behind by four with a score of 10-6. In the second quarter, scoring increased from the Fillies. Amber Heller put in 2 free throws, and Amanda Smith scored one more free throw. Kelli Nelson made a shot from behind the three-point line to round out the second quarter scoring. The Fillies went into half time with a score of 15, but Prince of Peace was still in the lead with 23.

At the beginning of the second half, Morrison came out very aggressive, moving onto the ball and making shots whenever possible. They were able to work through many unjust calls against them by the referees, and by the end of the third quarter, Morrison had regained the lead and achieved their biggest lead of the game, while holding the Irish to 2 points. Scoring was by Smiley for 4, Amber Heller for 5, Kelli Nelson for 3, and Abby Vock for 2, putting the score at the end of the third 25-29, with Morrison in the lead.

The fourth quarter proved to be the climax of the game, when Prince of Peace came fighting back and taking the lead by 1 with just under 4 minutes to go in the game. With 30 seconds left to go, Kelli Nelson dropped in a 3 pointer, which tied the game. In the final seconds of the game, Abby Vock scored a layup to put Morrison in the lead, but with seconds left to tick away, Prince of Peace’s Kelli Krogman had a breakaway layup tying the game at 43, and sending the game into overtime. Scoring in the fourth quarter was led by Kelli Nelson with 5 points, followed by Michaele Vock with 4, Abby Vock with 3, and Amber Heller with 2. Overtime started with 3 minutes on the clock, but Morrison was not able to pull any drive together other than a two point shot by Abby Vock. In the end, Prince of Peace scored a three point shot and got two free throws to win the game, 48-45.
