|
| The Morrison Chamber of Commerce Christmas Walk and Parade Committee is proud to announce Dick and Rachel Groharing are the host and hostess for the December 2 (Thursday evening), 2004 Christmas Walk and Parade. Dick and Rachel's lives have been intertwined and parallel to one another since their graduation from MCHS. Shortly after graduation Rachel began work at Smith Trust & Savings Bank as secretary to it's president, R. M. Wylder. Dick entered Bradley University, graduating in 1955 with a degree in Building Construction. They were married in August of 1954. In 1956 Dick entered the army and was stationed in Heilbronn, Germany. Rachel joined him in November of that year, and they lived there until Dick's discharge in 1958. On their return to Morrison Rachel resumed her work at the bank, and Dick entered his father's construction business. After both of their sons had graduated from high school Rachel joined Dick in the business and they worked together until retirement in 1996. Through the years Rachel was active as a Cub Scout Leader, library helper at the North Side School, Morrison Women's Club, the Hospital Auxiliary & Gift Shop, Resthave Home Auxiliary, and their church's Golden Hour Circle. She enjoyed playing tennis. Dick was active in the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, serving as president of both groups. He also served on the Morrison Grade School and High School Boards for 8 years, the Sauk Valley Community College Foundation for 9 years, and on SVCC's Board of Trustees for 18 years - 4 years each as secretary, vice chairman, and chairman. He represented SVCC to the Illinois Community College Trustees Association, and served that group as both Vice President and President. During that time Dick had several articles published on the subjects of Trusteeship, and Board/CEO Relationships, and spoke on these subjects at various national meetings. In 1995 he was chosen as the outstanding community college trustee in both the United States and Canada by the Association of Community College Trustees. Over the years they enjoyed wilderness backpacking, and canoe trips in Quetico Provincial Park in Canada. Since Dick and Rachel's retirement they have devoted much of their time to a common hobby of genealogy, and traveling around the country doing research. Dick is now serving as Chair of the City of Morrison's Historic Preservation Commission. Their sons are Tom (Wendy), and Drew (Lisa) Groharing. Dick and Rachel have six grandchildren: Tyler, Dylan, Brent, Seth, Brittany, and Ethan. by Editor, theCity1.com |
