National Family Week Nov. 21-27

November 21-27, 2004 will mark National Family Week in the United States.

What is National Family Week?

In 1968, National Family Week was started by an Indianapolis teacher and school administrator named Sam Wiley. According to Patti Faughn, University of Illinois Extension Family Life Educator, He wanted to provide individuals and communities with ways to promote, strengthen, and support strong families. The week of Thanksgiving was legislated and recognized as National Family Week. It has been promoted by the Alliance for Children and Families, a national organization, in 1970.

Last year over 220 local events were held across communities and families. The theme of National Family Week is Connections Count. Connections include:
Relationships within families and communities.
Access to transportation, technology, education and child care.
Solid financial foundations.

As you connect with your family this year during Thanksgiving Week, take time to acknowledge the relationships and services that have helped your family prosper. For information on organizing a community event during family week call the Alliance for Children and Families at 800-221-2681 or go on-line at www.nationalfamilyweek.org.
