Morrison Police Department News Release 10-19-04

The Morrison Police Department is investigating several check scams, originating from suspected foreign nationals. These include Nigeria, Canada and Mexico. Potential victims receive a notice that they have won a lottery, or have been entered in a winning lottery pool. They are then asked to deposit a check in their checking account, and forward a check (usually 10% of the total prize money) from that account to pay for insurance and processing fees. The Checks sent to the victims, by the scammer, is counterfeit, and may be drawn to a bank in New York or Tennessee.

Residents are asked to take any suspicious checks to their bank to verify its authenticity.Never, under any circumstances, should residents send money, or provide personal information (ie:account or social security numbers) to these individuals.
