What 4-H Can Do For You
By: Kenny Benson, Age 17

I have been in 4-H for 8 years and I have learned lots of things over the years. 4-H has showed me what I am capable of accomplishing. I have become a better public speaker, I have started livestock judging, and I became interested in beef through 4-H. 4-H gives you a chance to show your strengths and improve on your faults.

4-H has so many things to offer from 4-H Show and 4-H Camp to Legislative Connection and learning how to fly. I have attended 4-H Camp every year I have been in 4-H, so it is obviously tons of fun. The last two years I have been a counselor there and it is just as much fun as being a camper. You can go to camp starting at eight and then you can be a counselor when you are fifteen.

I have also done the 4-H Show for eight years and I would say that is the best part about 4-H. My favorite thing to do at the 4-H Show is to show my beef cattle. However there are many other things to do from rocketry and visual arts to crops and soils sciences. Everybody has lots of fun at the show and you get to meet people you haven’t seen in a while. There are a wide range of projects in 4-H, some that can teach you useful everyday skills, such as electricity. Others you can use to showcase your talents like visual arts and cooking.

There are several fun activities I have done in my club. We do things like go to Magic Waters, go to the gun club, and do hayrack rides. The club is where most of the magic happens during the 4-H year. That is where you plan through the year and choose your projects. You also do a lot of volunteer work in the community for your club. For instance our club hands out water at the Harvest Hammer and the SECD Run/Walk, we clean kennels for the animal shelter and we work at the 4-H food stand. In the club you also do fundraisers to make money for the club. My club does stuff like sell Poinsettias and Easter Lilies. The fundraisers make money for the fun things like the trip to Magic Waters and the camp out.

So as you can see 4-H has tons to offer, so much I can’t even begin to list them all. I have had lots of fun in my eight years in 4-H and plan to have that much fun and more in the next couple of years. So I hope you decide to join 4-H.
