TLP's thriller Voices in the Dark hits the mark

What are you afraid of? After getting lost in the south side of Chicago last weekend, I found what scared was. Timber Lake Playhouse’s newest production the dramatic thriller Voices is the Dark did it’s best to scare the audience last weekend.

Poor Lil, played by Amanda Hendricks, is a psychologist, hosting a call-in radio program. “Last Resort”, as the name illustrates, encourages persons at the end of their rope to call in.

After the last unusual caller on Friday night, Lil travels to a cabin on Lake Placid where she is to meet her husband. Of course, her husband doesn’t make it and we are introduced to her unhappy agent Hack, played by Courtney Crouse. We are also introduced to a couple of unstable locals Owen and Blue, played by Evan Enderle and Kyle Post, two dynamic actors that have entertained us all season and then the entertaining Jeff Ashworth, who plays Egan, a suspicious local detective.

Between the previous evening’s frightening and suspicious caller finding Lil at the cabin, a wrong number that persists, a lightening storm, lights going on and off, and more - Lil becomes visibly frightened as the tension and circumstances build. With lots of twists and turns it’s hard to figure out “who done it”, but it’s fun trying to.

The single set, a cabin in Lake Placid, was the best set of the season and very realistic, right down to trees outside the screened patio door and a full-size fireplace. From seats in front left we missed some of the action in the kitchen area and balcony so request center seats for a better view.

All the actors did a great job of building the suspense but especially Hendricks as Lil. Alone (or is she) in a big cabin in the woods during a lightening storm, I should have been scared too but I was too busy trying to figure out “who done it”!

Voices in the Dark was very enjoyable but if you are extremely afraid of the dark, lightening storms, or scary shows you may be the one to scream out. Not recommended for younger audiences.
