Five MHS students compete in Chemistry Olympiad

Five Morrison High School students competed in the Chemistry Olympiad at Clinton Community College on Saturday, March 27. Brad Eissens, Tim Houzenga, Amanda Oudekerk, Brady Popkins, and Doug Vandermyde took a 60-question chemistry test.

They competed against students from 13 other schools on both sides of the river from Wisconsin to Monmouth, Illinois. All the students are currently Chemistry I or Chemistry II. Each student takes that level test. Doug Vandermyde won a T-shirt for placing. This is the first time MHS has competed.

Gerry Elfline, MHS Chemistry teacher said, “The test was hard but the kids did well. I was proud of the fact the kids would give up a Saturday morning.”

While the student tested, the teachers spoke with chemistry professionals and college professors to answer questions and discuss what they expected from high school students. After the test the students took a virtual laboratory tour and watched chemistry demonstrations from the college students.

The event is sponsored by Sethness Products Co. of Clinton, Iowa.
