Some may remember a mural started by the senior class in the basement hallway of Morrison High School. It was never finished but the mural has inspired H.S. Art teacher Stuart Roddy and his Painting Class to paint a series of murals in the empty hall that leads to the Ag and Shop classrooms.
The first series of murals are taking shape already and represent the fall sports season: Volleyball, Football, Golf, and Girls Swimming. The class used actual photographs and projected them onto the wall. Then they traced the outline before beginning to paint. The Painting Class has a long way to go so they started painting after school and opened the painting to others to help do “fill in” work.
“Through the year they (the students) have been practicing exercises in class. Now they are applying what they have learned. By using glazing the pictures have depth to give the viewer the feeling of being part of the action and to feel the atmosphere,” Roddy explained.
Next the group plans to tackle winter and spring sports followed by school clubs. “Clubs will be harder because we don’t have a photograph to go off of,” he further noted.
Student John Benson said, “I’m surprised how quickly it’s progressing.”
